Here’s What Tom Hiddleston Loves Most about Playing Loki

Loki is easily the most beloved ‘villain’ of all time. Right from the moment that he was first introduced in Thor (2011) over ten years ago, fans have adored the God of Mischief.

Director Kate Herron arranged a ‘Loki School’ seminar during the pre-production of Loki, the new Disney+ series. To truly get to know the character, Herron asked Hiddleston to “talk through his 10 years of the MCU—from costumes to stunts, to emotionally how he felt in each movie.”

In an interview with EW over Zoom, Tom Hiddleston talked about the different aspects of portraying the God of Mischief.

Hiddleston recalled what he told Owen Wilson about what he loves the most about playing Loki,

“I think it’s because he has so much range, on the 88 keys on the piano, he can play the twinkly light keys at the top. He can keep it witty and light, and he’s the God of Mischief, but he can also go down to the other side and play the heavy keys. And he can play some really profound chords down there, which are about grief and betrayal and loss and heartbreak and jealousy and pride.”

Making Loki was quite special for Hiddleston as it was mainly filmed during the pandemic. He called it one of the most rewarding experiences of his life. “It’s a series about time, and the value of time, and what time is worth, and I suppose what the experience of being alive is worth.”

He also hopes all the thinking done during the lockdown reflects in the series and added, “But in some way, it must have because everything we make is a snapshot of where we were in our lives at that time.”

The Loki on the new show is the one who escaped S.H.I.EL.D. custody when the time heist goes wrong in Avengers: Endgame. Loki creates a branched timeline when he steals the Tesseract and disappears. This means that this alternate version of Loki hasn’t had his heroic character arc or met his demise at the hands of Thanos.

The series introduces the Time Variance Authority, an organization tasked with safeguarding the proper flow of time, who arrest this new Loki and want his help fixing all of the timeline problems he has caused since his escape.

He called Marvel’s decision to include the Time Variance Authority as “the best idea that anybody had pertaining to the series.”

Hiddleston seems far from done with Loki, as his future is undecided beyond the 6-part series. He said, “I’m open to everything. I have said goodbye to the character. I’ve said hello to the character. I have said goodbye to the character [again]. I’ve learned not to make assumptions, I suppose. I’m just grateful that I’m still here, and there are still new roads to explore.”
