It’s never easy when a legendary actor like Tom Hanks, who gave us movies like Cast Away, Forrest Gump, and Saving Private Ryan, hangs his hat and calls it quits on Hollywood life. But while all of us were holding our breaths for Hanks’ final decision, the actor gave us renewed hope in a recent interview.
Speaking with Variety for his upcoming film A Man Called Otto, Hanks broke the silence on his retirement and confirmed he has no “desire” to retire anytime soon. The Hollywood legend stated he’s “not working for the sake of working” and can afford to wait for a good script and will continue acting for a while. You can read his full answer below:
No, I don’t have any desire [to retire]. I’m not working for the sake of working. I’m in a very lucky position. It’s got to be fabulous. Rita and I talk about it all the time, which is there are only two reasons to go to work: It’ll be good, or it’ll be fun. And if it’s neither of those, I’ll stay home until the cows come on. I don’t need to do anything.
Hanks owes his career’s breakthrough to the comedy genre, with movies like Splash, Big, and A League of Their Own putting him on the map. Of course, since then, the actor has diversified his work with films like Forrest Gump, The Terminal, Toy Story, Captain Philips, and more.
With 40 years under his belt, Hanks is moving forward with many more films under his filmography, the latest being Marc Forster’s A Man Called Otto. The American actor will also appear in 2023’s Asteroid City and Here, and he also has multiple projects under his production company.
