The Mission Impossible franchise star Tom Cruise is reportedly unhappy over distribution decisions for the upcoming seventh installment of the franchise.
The movie has already made headlines a couple of times. From Tom Cruise berating the cast and crew for their carelessness of COVID guidelines to being delayed multiple times. But it seems like it has new trouble brewing.
The movie is one of the 2021 releases stuck in the deal between Viacom and Paramount Pictures about hybrid releases. Productions could have either taken same-day-and-date releases or first theaters and then the streaming platform.
But, THR now reports that Tom Cruise is unhappy with Viacom’s CEO, Bob Bakish’s decision to give one of the biggest action thrillers a mere 45-day theatrical window. The mega-star would like his traditional 90-day theatrical window for Mission: Impossible 7, as reported.
The deal could both be accepted and denied. Cruise’s presence at the box office has always been incredible. Whether it be his Mission Impossible franchise or Top Gun franchise, however, he is determined (and famous enough) to demand and defend exclusive theatrical releases or at least want a wider gap.
But with new shifts in the company, it’s also likely that they will give MI7 the same treatment as their other releases. Because streaming is turning out to be a giant investment.
The hybrid releases are pitting distribution companies and actors, directors, producers against one another. It is also reported that Christopher Nolan has asked for around a 100 days theatrical gap for his upcoming movie.
Since the merger of ViacomCSB and Paramount Pictures and appointing a new CEO for the latter, it has been reported that the company is prioritizing streaming over theatrical releases.
Mission: Impossible 7 is one of the many other movies stuck in the Viacom and Paramount Pictures deals, starting with A Quiet Place II.
Paramount Pictures and Mission Impossible franchise go way back – almost 25 years – with Cruise being the star of the show every time.
With Paramount shifting their direction now, it’ll be interesting to see what route the two-decade-long relationship between the actor and the company takes in the future, especially with a possible Mission: Impossible 8 on the line.
