Toei’s Manga Matsuri Film Festival isn’t something you should miss if you are into some light-hearted fun. The last two years of the event brought us some children’s classics that were absolutely amazing.
This time it brings you the latest offerings from the Butt Detective and The Science Manga Survival franchise.
After running annually from 1969 to 1990, the festival was revived in 2019, bringing both old and new children’s films to the masses. The festival has screened a variety of films from Dragon Ball Movie: Curse of the Blood Rubies to Disney films like Snow White and 101 Dalmatians.
Continuing the saga, this iteration may also surprise you.
The official website for Toei’s Manga Matsuri Film Festival has released a combined trailer for Butt Detective the Movie: The Secret of Souffle Island and Survive! In The Deep Sea anime films. Both films are set to debut on 13th August 2021.
The first half of the trailer previews the Butt Detective movie. It begins with an overhead look at Souffle Island and the main villain setting his eyes on the blue gem at the top of a tower. Zaza, Ruka, and other members of the island welcome the detective as he is determined to solve an unknown problem.
The second half features the trailer for Survive! In The Deep Sea, where Geo and Pipi, the children accompanying Professor Kon, are abducted by a giant octopus underwater.
The scene then cuts to Geo firing a bullet while Pipi is lying unconscious in his arms.
The trailer gives us a preview of the theme song “Itsudatte Survival!” by Yuiko Ohara with Geo and Pipi’s voice actors.
The guest cast for both the movies was also revealed. The new Science manga Survival movie features Kappei Yamaguchi (L from Death Note) as Professor Kon.

Toei has also unveiled a visual for the movies:
The top half of the visual shows the Butt Detective and his assistant in a wingsuit flying over the Souffle Island with the villain flying behind in a poop hot air balloon.
The bottom half features Professor Kon’s ship underwater between a giant squid and a whale and Geo and Pipi in their underwater suits.
Although the target audience for these films might be young, there just might be something for older fans too. Try checking it out this year, and you might surprise yourself.

About Science Manga Survival
Science Manga Survival is a South Korean manga and educational book set by Gomdori and illustrator, Hyun-Dong Han. It was first launched in 2008.
It has already been adapted into an anime film, Survive! Inside the Human Body, in July 2020. Its second anime film, Survive! In the Deep Sea, will premiere in August 2021.
Science Manga Survival follows a group of children as they go on various adventures while using scientific facts to educate the audience as well as help them in the journey.
