Breaking Down the Shocking Titans S4 Mid-Season Finale

When it was announced that Brother Blood would be one of the antagonists of Titans S4, I didn’t expect to sympathize with him this much! Through the course of six episodes, fans have really come to root for the tortured soul, who sadly, turns into a villain in Ep 6.

So what exactly goes down in the mid-season finale? Do the Titans defeat Mother Mayhem?

Despite the Titans’ best efforts, Sebastian completes the ritual and transforms into Brother Blood with Mother Mayhem’s help. This also offsets an event where the Titans mysteriously disappear and Gar/Beast Boy enters the cosmic force known as “Red.”

With loads of twists, turns, and bouts of frustration, the Titans S4 mid-season finale was quite a ride! Let’s break down the ending and evaluate what’s in store for the rest of the season.

Conner Becomes More Like Lex

Conner Kent

Right from an absentee father figure to being scrutinized in the public eye, Conner Kent has been under too much pressure and he is finally beginning to crack. In S4 Ep 6, he shaves off his head, which gives him a more Lex Luther look. He also gets an aggressive personality to match it.

Some of his plans to stop May Bennett/Mother Mayhem do work—like, using LexCorp’s satellites to reflect sunlight on the moon and delay Mayhem’s rituals. But others, like being unnecessarily rude and condescending to the team and leaving them to go on a solo mission, do not do well at all.

Even when he uses Mayhem’s hack to find her location, it turns out to be a trap, wherein she easily overpowers him and keeps him bound.

Mother Mayhem Convinces Sebastian to Become Brother Blood

May Bennett/Mother Mayhem

As we saw in the last episode, Sebastian only surrenders to Mother Mayhem to save the Titans. So even in her possession, he tries to resist completing the ritual. That is, until Mayhem uses his own memories to torture him.

Using three examples, she illustrates that being a good person has led him nowhere. First, when he was an orphan, he gave up his bed for another kid. Then when he was in school, his professor penalized him for being “too smart.” Later in life, he held himself back during a romantic relationship out of fear of being undeserving of that love.

These frustrating feelings, with the growing physical pains he has been experiencing, convince Sebastian to do the ritual—so that he can finally reach his true potential.

The Titans Try to Sabotage Mother Mayhem’s Ritual

The Titans decide to combine Jinx and Rachel’s powers to channel teleportation and rescue both Conner and Sebastian. But, of course, the odds are not in their favor and they face many difficulties.

Sebastian/Brother Blood

For one, Mother Mayhem is more powerful than all of them, and she even manages to stab Jinx. Rachel even turns into the White Raven, but she, Dick, and Gar in his Gorilla form are subdued in no time.

Finally, when the Blood Moon appears for a few moments, Sebastian takes it as an opportunity to complete the ritual and submerges himself in the well. As he is transforming, he lets out a violent scream that reverberates through the whole place, sending the temple crashing down.

At that very moment, Gar answers the Red’s call while the rest of the Titans disappear.

Why did the Titans disappear to? Will they come back?

For the last few episodes, Gar has been hearing voices and having visions about the “Red.” In this episode, he even meets a mysterious figure who tells him to choose Red when he “sees the tower split.”

Gar’s visions come to fruition with Sebastian’s transformation into Brother Blood, and he realizes that this is the exact moment he needs to go to the Red. It’s a great decision because he’s one of the few who don’t disappear, thanks to Sebastian’s deadly scream.

Gar/Beast Boy and Rachel/Raven

Now, the Red is one of the main primal forces in DC’s cosmology. It is what empowers metahumans and mystics who draw their power through a connection with animals, like Gar. (There are also other “colors” in this cosmology, including Poison Ivy’s Green, which is drawn from plant life.)

To understand why exactly this is crucial, think of Gar as Scott Lang/Ant-Man, who was stuck inside the Quantum Realm. By being there, he avoided the possibility of getting turned into dust himself. So by “going to the Red,” Gar, too, shields himself from whatever Sebastian has unleashed.

This means that when Titans S4 returns, we’re likely to see more of the Red explored and explained on screen, depicting the huge role Gar will play in bringing back the rest of the Titans. We get to hopefully see them curing Sebastian and defeating Mother Mayhem once and for all.
