David Harbour Shares Insights on Red Guardian in Thunderbolts

David Harbour’s stint as Jim Hopper will end with the upcoming last season of Stranger Things, but he’s already got a much bigger film deal in his pocket. The actor is ready to star once again as the Red Guardian in the upcoming MCU film, Thunderbolts, coming out on November 26, 2024.

The MCU’s version of the “Suicide Squad” will feature some of the grayer characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe recruited to score their redemption.

Black Widow introduced quite a few members of the Thunderbolts team, including Yelena Bulova, Red Guardian, Taskmaster, and Contessa Fontaine, who will be to the Thunderbolts what Nick Fury was to the Avengers.

In an interview with Total Film (via GamesRadar), the Red Guardian actor shares his character’s development, discussing a new path for the reformed superhero. The actor teases that the MCU can “play with him” differently and make his story arc “surprising and unexpected.”

I love Red Guardian. I can’t wait to pull back the layers. The great thing about him is that he’s not very well-defined in the comics, like some of the other Marvel superheroes. So, we can play with him in a different way and be surprising and unexpected.

Harbour’s comments are spot on because Marvel Comics doesn’t go to the depths of the Red Guardian’s core. Thunderbolts will give more depth to the lovable, goofy character and flesh out his journey when he was in his prime as he relives his glory days in the 2024 film.

The Red Guardian striving to be better was a plot point hinted at the end of Black Widow, and we’re excited to see how the writers will continue his story in Thunderbolts.

Audiences will also see how the movie explores the shaky relationship between Yelena and Alexei Shostakov, something we didn’t get enough of in Black Widow. Harbour’s enthusiasm for fleshing out the character’s history will be a treat to watch and analyze in Thunderbolts.

Thunderbolts is expected to release in theaters worldwide on November 26, 2024.
