Call of Duty’s last game, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, received praise from both critics and fans alike. While the game’s content updates aren’t stopping anytime soon, the future of the franchise is a tad bit unclear. Activision is reportedly planning to change its yearly Call of Duty release pattern.
What this simply means is that there might not be a new Call of Duty title until next year. If that’s the case, then for the first time in 18 years, Call of Duty will not receive a yearly title. Latest rumors say that Modern Warfare 2 will keep receiving content updates for the rest of 2023.
Rumors state that some kind of ‘premium’ Call of Duty release will occur towards the end of the year, leading many to believe that it’ll be a continuation of Modern Warfare 2’s campaign. If this ends up being the case, then we’ll not get a full-fledged Call of Duty game until next year.
Certain rumors have pointed towards Call of Duty’s 2024 entry being another Black Ops game, set during the Gulf War. The franchise’s last Black Ops title was 2020’s Black Ops: Cold War.
Before Call of Duty’s 2024 entry is announced and revealed, there are 3 things that fans wish for.
- Bringing Back Focus on Smaller-Scale Game Modes
- Not Relying on a Seasonal Approach
- Have Most of the Game Data on the Disc.
The reasons are explained in detail below.
I. Bringing Back Focus on Smaller-Scale Game Modes
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 had a major emphasis on large-scale modes but what the 2024 entry needs to do is put more emphasis on small-scale modes like 6v6 modes, for example, Team Deathmatch, Search & Destroy etc., this’ll deliver a more traditional Call of Duty experience.
Infinity Ward has supported large-scale modes better than the traditional ones, which made fans pretty divisive and vocal. So, what it needs to do is keep the large-scale modes for the players that want them, but also put more emphasis on the smaller-scale ones which make the game more traditional.
II. Not Relying on a Seasonal Approach
In recent years, Call of Duty has adopted a seasonal approach as the games have received new maps, weapons etc. every few months. What the 2024 title needs to do is not rely on this approach because underwhelming content drop can damage the game’s reception.
Sure, having a live-service model and a seasonal approach can give players a consistent flow of content and it does generate more income for the franchise. But content drops which don’t live up to fans’ expectations can damage goodwill. They don’t need to drop this approach altogether; they should just rely on it less and ensure that the 2024 title comes packed with tons of content right out of the gate.
III. Have Most of the Game Data be on the Disc
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s physical copy had a download size of 150GB but the disc itself infamously contained only 70MB of game data, 72.23MB to be specific. The disc contained almost no data but was accompanied by a beefy data download.
So, what the 2024 title needs to do is have most of the game data on the disc, otherwise there’s no point in selling physical copies and then downloading the majority of it online. Having most of the game data on the disc will allow the game to download faster, rather than using the internet for a hefty data download which could take hours if the network speed is slow.
