Director Taika Waititi recently revealed that Thor is going to face a mid-life crisis in the upcoming MCU film Thor: Love and Thunder.
After Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, MCU is all set to return to the big screen once again with a solo film starring an original Avenger with Thor: Love and Thunder. Chris Hemsworth is all set to reprise his role as Thor in the film. The God of Thunder will be the first MCU hero to get a fourth solo film.
In a recent conversation with AP , director Taika Waititi revealed that Thor will be seen going through a ‘mid-life crisis’ in the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder. Waititi shared,
Thor is just trying to figure out his purpose, trying to figure out exactly who he is and why he’s a hero or whether he should be a hero. I guess you could call it a midlife crisis.

The director does not explain further so early into the promotions but we can expect to see the God of Thunder on his quest to discover his true purpose in life, which could involve major characterization and personality build-up.
As seen in Avengers: Endgame, Thor will be seen spending time with the Guardians of the Galaxy before the Asgardian Prince is summoned to New Asgard. From the trailer, it seems like he is suffering from PTSD after the Infinity saga and is on to a healing journey.
In the end of Avengers: Endgame, Thor decided to relegate his duties to Valkyrie, since he was traumatized and in major depression after Thanos’ snap. As per the trailer, Thor is still hanging out with his galaxy buddies when something bad prompts him to get back to his duties.
As per Waititi’s comments, Thor still does not know his purpose as the crisis is not over for him. Perhaps in the course of the film, the God of Thunder will be able to overcome his inner turmoil and get back on track.
On another note, Natalie Portman is all set to play Mighty Thor in the film while Christian Bale will be portraying Gorr the God Butcher, who is the main antagonist in the film.
A superhero or God going through something as common or ‘normal’ as a mid-life crisis will definitely be a unique and fresh change from general superhero flicks. It will be interesting to watch how MCU and Waititi deals with such a plotline.
You can watch all the previous MCU movies featuring Thor on Disney+.
