The Witcher season 2 is here, and it has a lot of new monsters with mysterious origins popping up.
Besides Nivellen’s Bruxa lover and Zeugl from the underground sewers, all other monsters this season have been otherworldly, quite literally.
So, where did these new mutated monsters come from? Geralt’s first guess was that it was created by a witch, but when that theory is proven wrong, the witcher’s quest for an answer begins.
The answer actually lies in the beginning animation for the final episode. The logo formed with spheres colliding into each other directly hints at the great Conjunction of the Spheres everyone in the series regularly keeps bringing up.
In simple words, the new creatures are coming to the Continent from the other worlds that collided during the Conjunction. But monsters can’t just teleport at their own will.
Here’s where portals come into play – portals somewhat similar to the one Yennefer and all other mages use throughout the series. However, these portals can’t be created by any random person, and it all boils down to Ciri.
After Geralt kills the mutated Leshy and Myriapod, he finds traces of monolith’s black ashy substance when he tears the creatures open.
A call back to season 1 – Ciri reveals that, in an attempt to escape the Black Knight, she screamed with such intensity and desperation that she made the monolith outside Cintra collapse.
Monoliths, also known as Obelisks, have been indestructible pillars present on the Continent since the Conjunction. They are understood to be the residues of the event that brought together monsters, men, and elves.
When Geralt goes to Istredd to research them, he theorizes that they are much more than just points of collision and suggests they are actually portals that can lead in and out of the other spheres/worlds.
Just as the duo is researching more about the monoliths, Ciri screaming for Geralt’s help conjures a Chernebog, which Geralt later kills.
The finale confirms this theory that Ciri’s screams act as a portal that can pull in monsters who have been on the other spheres since before the collision. When the Deathless Mother possesses Ciri, she screams and breaks the monolith hidden inside the tree in Kaer Morhen to release The Wyvern and The Basilisk.
Ciri later sends the Voleth Meir to another sphere where Ciri, Geralt, and Yennefer are also transported. There they face The Wild Hunt, but Ciri pulls them back to the Continent, and disaster’s averted.
Not for long, though. Now that the series has introduced these spheres and the Wild Hunt, there’s a possibility that more chaos from other worlds will be coming to haunt Ciri in the upcoming seasons.
