The ending of The Witcher: Blood Origin answers a lot of questions about the world of The Witcher and also sets up the story of The Witcher Season 3.
It explains the truth behind the multiversal event, the Conjunction of the Spheres. It also talks about a brand-new prophecy that is going to impact Princess Ciri’s life in the upcoming Season 3 of The Witcher.
The Witcher: Blood Origin is set 1200 years before the events of the original series. In Blood Origin, Geralt of Rivia’s friend, Jaskier, learns the story behind the complicated history of the Continent from an enigmatic, mysterious Storyteller who apparently transcends the boundaries of time and space.
The Season 1 finale of Blood Origin explains what happened during the Conjunction of the Spheres and how the first Witcher came into existence. Here’s everything we learned from the finale and what it could mean for The Witcher Season 3.
1. The Conjunction of the Spheres Explained
The Conjunction of the Spheres is a multiversal, mystical event that led to the collision of time and space.
It all began when Syndril discovered how to use ancient dwarven Monoliths to travel through time and space. Sorcerer Balor misused this power eventually. When Syndril realized that this power had been abused by Balor, he traveled to Xintr’ea to stop him.
However, Syndril was too late, and Balor was already infused with the Chaos magic. Syndril had no other choice, so he bound himself and his magic of Order to Balor’s Chaos and master Monolith. As a result, the master Monolith was shattered, but the destruction led to the Conjunction of the Spheres.
The Conjunction of the Spheres led to the origin of the monsters in the world of The Witcher. These monsters were creatures from another world who had been stranded on the Continent due to the mystical event.
The origin of humanity was also brought by this event, as humans were transported to this world because of the Conjunction of the Spheres. When the humans appeared, they persecuted and subjugated the elves, who had originally taken the Continent from the dwarves.
2. How was the first Witcher created?
When sorcerer Balor gained control over a monster of another world, he established the Golden Empire in partnership with Princess Merwyn. Due to a misadventure, the Seven ended up with the corpse of a monster which gave them the idea to combine the monster’s blood with one of their own.
The Seven created the first Witcher by combining the essence of a monster with one of their own, using magic and alchemy. The first Witcher so created was Fjal.
Fjal was subjected to an elaborate and unique ritual that later came to be known as the Trial of Grasses. The ritual involved the blood of the monster slowly taking over his mind, which could only be stopped by Éile’s love for Fjal.
Éile’s love and affection enabled Fjal to retain his humanity for longer. But there was no way to get rid of him other than killing him sooner or later.
Though the Seven initially thought that only one such being was enough, they realized that more such beings were needed to deal with the monsters effectively. Their attempt to stop sorcerer Balor goes wrong, and it ends up bringing several monsters into the world.
At this point, the Seven realize that more Witchers have to be created to deal with the monsters. The ritual of the Trial of Grasses is changed over the years, using the essence and blood of different monsters.
This could be another potential reason behind the Witchers being almost extinct during Geralt’s time. Since monsters were rarer, creating more Witchers without their blood was impossible.
3. How the Elder Blood is Related to Ciri
The Elder Blood has long been a huge mystery in The Witcher. Blood Origin finally throws some light upon it.
After Fjal’s transformation into the first Witcher, he sleeps with Éile for the first time. Éile bears Fjal’s children, which gives rise to the Elder Blood. Éile and Fjal’s bloodline contains Chaos magic from another world, which is behind the origin of the Elder Blood.
Now, how is all this related to Princess Ciri from The Witcher? Here’s how. A few years after the mystical Conjunction of the Spheres, one of Fjal and Éile’s descendants, Lara Dorren, fell in love with a Cintran King and slept with him.
As a result, the Elder Blood, born out of Fjal and Éile’s bloodline, became a part of the Cintran bloodline and, thereby, a part of Princess Ciri. We’re not yet sure about the power of the Elder Blood.
Its magic could be a combination of the elven magic of Order and the Chaos magic from the creature whose essence was used to create the first Witcher. If this is the case, the ones belonging to the Elder Blood have a mystical connection to the Conjunction of the Spheres. For all we know, Ciri could be a symbol of the Monolith destroyed in Xintr’ea.
4. The New Prophecy in The Witcher: Blood Origin
The Witcher: Blood Origin reveals a forgotten prophecy that could be of huge significance for Ciri in the original show. Like the prophecy in The Witcher, this is also narrated by Ithlinne.
The time of the spheres is upon us. Aen Seidhe lost across the skies. Cast adrift in time. Ever searching for love… Lost. And left behind. The Lark’s seed shall carry forth the first note of a song that ends all times, and one of her blood shall sing the last.
Ithlinne
This prophecy is different from the one the Storyteller recounts, which is why Jaskier was surprised in the first place. The prophecy says that one would be responsible for the end of time.
5. The Witcher: Blood Origin Post-Credits Scene Explained
Now that we’re done talking about the major questions, let’s decode the post-credits scene.
Blood Origin’s post-credits scene directly links the series to the original show by revealing the origin of the Wild Hunt. These ancient elves will be pursuing Princess Ciri in the future because of her connection to the Elder Blood.
During the Conjunction of the Spheres, the elves were also scattered across space and time, including Avallac’h and Eredin Bréacc Glas, who are already keeping an eye on Ciri. If we go by the canon story in the books, both these elves eventually become obsessed with pursuing Ciri because of her obvious connection to the Elder Blood.
At the end of The Witcher Season 2, we see the Wild Hunt becoming aware of Ciri. Thus, the post-credits scene directly connects The Witcher and its prequel series by focusing on the origin of the Wild Hunt.
The prequel is of utmost significance for Ciri’s future storyline in the main series.
