When CDPR confirmed the development of the next entry in the Witcher series earlier this year, starving fans were sent into a frenzy. The Witcher 3 has been a title that speaks to the heart, so naturally, any fan would desperately want to see the great strides the coming addition will make.
But unfortunately, it is still in the works and way too far from a release. The fact that there are very slim details to show for the game solidifies this claim, and now a recent comment from the Polish devs further suggests that things are unlikely to change for quite some time.
In CDPR’s Q1 2022 earnings report on May 26, CEO Adam Kiciński spoke to the investors about The Witcher 4’s progress by revealing that it has “concluded the research phase.”
We are very eager to revisit the universe which has shaped our history to such an extent. We have recently concluded the research phase for the first game in the new Witcher saga, which means that from now on, further development expenditures will be capitalized on our balance sheet.

This basically implies that The Witcher 4 is yet to enter pre-production, and the developers, so far, were focused on wrapping up information related to the setting, characters, and timeline of the game, among a thousand other details.
Out of all the bits that the dev must have finalized, what they have shared for now is that The Witcher 4 will run on Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 5 to “elevate development predictability and efficiency.”
Besides this, an image of the School of the Lynx’s medallion has also been revealed, along with plans to make the game available on other storefronts despite collaboration with Epic.
With The Witcher 4 still several years away from launch, it’s surely going to be a long wait before we get to see the new direction taken by the saga.
While waiting will always be excruciating for fans, CDPR should take all the time they need to make a game that matches everyone’s lofty ambitions by being as scintillating as its predecessor.
About The Witcher 4
The Witcher 4 is a placeholder name for an upcoming game from CD Projekt Red based in The Witcher universe. It has been labeled as a new saga and will most likely not feature Geralt of Rivia as the protagonist.
