After more than a decade, The Walking Dead flagship is finally ready to close its chapter. While some of the storylines will be continued in its many spinoffs, Season 11’s “Rest in Peace” will be the grand conclusion to television’s best-known zombie saga.
So what can we expect in the series finale?
In The Walking Dead S11 Ep 23, Pamela allows a herd of zombies to infiltrate the Commonwealth’s wards, putting both the Alexandrians and the commonfolk in danger. This move directly sets up the evolved zombies as the main villains of the series finale.
Let’s look into Episode 23 a little more to figure out what the series finale beholds.
1. Ep 23 Sets up the Real Villains
Season 11 has been following the last few volumes of The Walking Dead comics, where the Pamela Milton-led Commonwealth was the main antagonist. However, the show has introduced a second contender to that mix: Evolved Zombies.
These zombies seem to have some sort of intelligence, demonstrated in the walker who was able to pick up a knife and retain it in the previous episode.
Such evolved zombies have been spotted quite a few times in the last 11 seasons of the show, but no explanations for them have been provided yet. This is something that a spinoff may take care of.
Getting back to the finale, it looks like the Commonwealth will have double the problems to deal with. The evolved zombies had started infiltrating the walls, so Pamela chose to let them breach the Wards, where the poor live.
Since the Alexandrians have secured a minor victory by getting their settlements back, the Commonwealth may not be the biggest issue in the finale. Their main enemy will be the undead with working brains.
As we see in Ep 23, Daryl and the team have already started battling it out with the evolved zombies.
2. The Commonwealth’s Future
It’s most likely that we shall see Rosita trying to rescue Coco from the wards of the Commonwealth’s children.
This will inevitably put the team in the line of fire, as the evolved zombies have begun infiltrating these very wards, thanks to Pamela’s decision of protecting the rich at the expense of the poor. She already has a civil movement at her hands and this move will cost her.
I think it’s safe to assume that in the series finale, the Alexandrians will secure some kind of victory when they face the zombies in the ward. Their actions will win over the Commonwealth’s lower economic classes who will feel abandoned and wronged.
They may even choose to leave the Commonwealth, if not try to bring the whole community down. Things are not looking good for the Commonwealth, who might suffer a crumbling end in the series finale
3.Will Judith Grimes… “Rest in Peace”?
In Ep 23, Judith takes a bullet that was intended for Maggie. Judith has been one of the beacons of hope in this storyline, so the possibility of her death is quite sorrowful.
In the comics, her character died when she was an infant itself, so the show’s Judith has definitely outlived her fate. But was she kept alive only to drive home a painful death in the series finale? Time will tell.
Another little detail tied to Judith is her calling out to her father as she falls unconscious. This leads us to wonder if Rick Grimes will make a comeback in the finale, or if this is a setup for the spinoff he will be in.
4. Who will die in the series finale?
The series finale is titled Rest in Peace, and is likely to depict quite a few deaths. Apart from Judith, we might have to get ready to say goodbye to some other characters.
The characters who definitely won’t die in The Walking Dead series finale are Daryl, Maggie, Negan, Rick, and Michonne—all of whom are set to return for their respective spinoff shows.
The ones on the not-safe list are: Jerry, Aaron, Rosita, Father Gabriel, Connie, Kelly, Yumiko, Magna, Jules, and Luke. Stay tuned for the series finale airing on November 20 to know more.
5. About The Walking Dead
The Walking Dead is a neo-western horror drama that is based on the comic book series of the same name written by Robert Kirkman. It currently stars Norman Reedus, Melissa McBride, Lauren Cohan, Jeffrey Dean Morgan and others.
Rick Grimes, a sheriff’s deputy, wakes up from a coma to find that the world has just gone through a zombie apocalypse. He soon realizes that the world is divided into the zombies- the ‘walkers’- and a group of survivors who will do anything to survive.
The recent season, that is season 11, will adapt material from issues #175–193 of the comic book series and focuses on the group’s encounter with the Commonwealth, a large network of communities that has advanced equipment and almost fifty thousand survivors living in their different settlements.
