TWD Dead City S1 Finale: “Doma Smo” and “the Dama” Explained

The Walking Dead: Dead City season finale, titled “Doma Smo,” has a significant implication for Negan. In the sixth and final episode of season 1, Negan and Maggie’s rescue mission came to an end, but their story did not. The show hinted at a bleak future for Negan, who was captured by the Croat as Maggie and Herschel departed from Manhattan.

The Croat was not the ultimate adversary. Contrary to the initial belief that the Croat had established his own version of the Saviors, he was actually the covert follower of another antagonist.

Portrayed by Lisa Emery and called “the Dama” in the finale, Dead City’s new character is determined to make Negan revert to his former role as a ruthless leader of a formidable gang.

If Negan agrees to the position proposed by the Dama, “Doma Smo” could be a remarkable turning point for a character who has not had any real influence since Rick Grimes defeated him in season 8.

The episode’s title is directly connected to Negan’s fate. “Domo Smo” is a French expression that means “we are home” in English. The show uses “doma smo” in more than one way, as the Croat considers his position in the Dama’s organization his new “home” after he left the Saviors.

But most importantly, it also applies to Negan’s new headquarters. The Croat thanked Maggie for bringing Negan “home” and then uttered the titular phrase. Manhattan has no sentimental value for Negan in Dead City, of course, but the Croat views it as a place of affinity for both of them, which explains why he uses the term.

Referring to this place as Negan’s “home” is also a foreshadowing of his character’s future. His reaction to his new role is uncertain, but Dead City suggests that it can be a place where Negan can feel comfortable and perhaps revert to his previous self.

The location may be unfamiliar, but the authority and esteem he can gain by accepting the Dama’s offer would indeed be a revival of a past era for Negan.

Furthermore, “Domo Smo” is a subtle reference to the show’s new antagonist. It’s not a coincidence that the title used by the Croat’s boss is also French. “Dama” is French for a woman of high rank, which matches well with how Emery’s character has been portrayed so far.

Described as someone who enjoys the finer things in life, the Dama is either someone who originates from a wealthy background or has adopted that sort of identity for herself in the middle of the zombie apocalypse.

Her style and mannerisms are also indicative of a person in a higher social class than most of her peers, which is shown by the way she despises the Croat in The Walking Dead: Dead City.
