Season 3 of The Umbrella Academy Explains the Origin of the Commission

The Temps Commission was the main antagonist of Season 1 of The Umbrella Academy. This clandestine time-hopping organization’s goal is to keep the timeline flowing normally by secretly influencing history.

It took Number Five decades to find a path home after spending decades in the Commission.

During the 1960s adventures in Season 2, the Commission—mainly Kate Walsh’s Handler—once again stood in the way of the Hargreeves siblings, but eventually found new leadership under the kindhearted Herb, who promised to take the right approach.

Herb’s rule, however, is short-lived, since The Umbrella Academy’s grandfather paradox permanently eliminates the Commission.

While digging through the wreckage, Five and Lila discover that Number Five himself was the one who found the commission.

In the aftermath of the third season’s kugelblitz debacle, Five’s wrinkly counterpart is the only survivor of The Commission’s kugelblitz and passes a message to his younger self before promptly dying.

It is necessary to determine which version of Five started the Commission before understanding why Number Five started it. An Oblivion tattoo is found on the chest of the Founder of the Umbrella Academy, who is 100 years old and has only one arm.

After Allison and Sir Reginald Hargreeves reset the universe, Five’s missing arm magically reappears after the tattoo and impromptu amputation during Season 3.

It is possible that Five lost his arm once again in The Umbrella Academy Season 4, but it is more likely Founder Five came from a timeline in which Sir Reginald’s universal reset failed—one where the Umbrellas and Sparrows entered Oblivion and Five lost his arm, but Allison was never able to press the reset button.

Due to the kugelblitz, the Five would have been left with no universe… but he would still be able to travel through time. In an attempt to avert the destruction of the universe, Five may have tried to stop the kugelblitz before it began.

Founder Five’s last warning—”Don’t save the world”—may explain why members of the Commission come from all previous timelines. The old man must have realized that his Commission mission had failed, and his only option had to be to make Reginald hit Reset.

According to this theory, the Umbrella Academy Commission was just one big experiment to prevent the apocalypse in Season 3 from happening.

Alternatively, perhaps Five was just destined to create the Commission. Five visits Pogo to get the same tattoo he saw in The Umbrella Academy’s time-proof bunker in order to “close the loop.”

Since Five already knows what the tattoo looks like, he gets it despite not having seen it before. Five now knows he’s the Commission’s Founder, so perhaps he will also close that loop, beginning the Commission because he knows it should exist.
