The 94th Academy Awards, popularly known as Oscars 2022 is round the corner and the Academy recently dropped the nominations for different categories.
If you’re a film buff, cinephile or simply want to check out the Oscar nominees before the big night, you’re at the right place.
To make life easier for us and other cinephiles around, I have put together a list of streaming services where you can watch the 2022 Oscar nominees. From Dune to Licorice Pizza, the list is pretty long.
But there’s a reason why the Oscars are such a big deal, isn’t there? So, if you haven’t already watched them, here’s you chance to experience some great cinema. Also, it will make watching the Oscars and live tweeting about it more fun if you know stuff about the movies.
While many of the Oscar nominated films are available to watch for free if you have the concerned subscription to the streaming service, some are not directly available to stream.
They are instead available to rent or buy through one platform or the other. So, there’s always a way.
For your information, the 94th Academy Awards will be held on 27th March, 2022 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood and air on ABC from 8 pm ET.
1 Ascension
Nominations – Best documentary feature
Ascension is an observational documentary by Jessica Kingdon, focusing on the Chinese economy at large. It also deals with topics such as the blue-collar workers and the Chinese middle-class among others.
It is a good look on contemporary Chinese politics, economy and the social structure as well. Recommended if you’re into documentaries or want to watch something educational.
2 Attica
Nominations – Best documentary feature
Another Academy nominated documentary to catch up on would be Stanley Nelson’s Attica. In its 50th anniversary, Attica narrates the tale of the famous prison rebellion.
What makes it more interesting is that the film was made based on the experiences, opinions and anecdotes shared by people who experienced it themselves.
3 Belfast
Nominations – Best picture, best actor (Ciarán Hinds), best director (Kenneth Branagh), best supporting actress (Judi Dench)
Kenneth Branagh’s masterpiece is set in Northern Ireland and captures a period of severe political and religious turbulence. Inspired by his own childhood, the film follows the story of a young boy’s childhood days during The Troubles.
4 Being the Ricardos
Nominations – Best actor (Javier Bardem), best actress (Nicole Kidman), best supporting actor (J.K. Simmons)
Directed by Aaron Sorkin, this film is a must watch for incredible performances by the cast. It is pretty evident from the categories this film has been nominated for.
The film tells the story of Hollywood power couple Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz as they work their way through personal and professional obstacles and ups and downs in their relationship.
5 CODA
Nominations – Best picture, best supporting actor (Troy Kotsur)
The Sian Heder film is a feel-good slice of life which revolves around a family where every member is deaf, except the 17-year-old daughter, Ruby. The story takes a leap when Ruby discovers a passion for singing.
6 Don’t Look Up
Nominations – Best picture, best original score
I am sure if there’s one film you’ve heard of in this list, it must be this one. The film consists of an all-star cast featuring Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Jonah Hill, Timothee Chalamet, Meryl Streep and Cate Blanchett.
The film itself is a satire on climate change and political crisis where an approaching comet is heading towards the Earth and might destroy it.
6 Drive My Car
Nominations – Best picture, best director (Ryusuke Hamaguchi)
Japanese director Ryusuke Hamaguchi is back with a sombre drama which deals with relationships and emotions, love, loss and life in his own beautiful way.
I recommend this to avid readers or literature enthusiasts as well, since the film is based on a short story by Haruki Murakami.
8 Dune
Nominations – Best picture, best costume design
Denis Villeneuve’s magnum-opus based on Frank Herbert’s 1965 sci-fi novel has grabbed quite a few eyeballs and also features an ensemble cast with the likes of Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Jason Momoa, Oscar Isaac and Rebecca Ferguson.
The film is worth a watch if you are into sci-fi or fantasy in general or want some stellar set design, cinematography, action and costume design.
9 Encanto
Nominations – Best animated picture, best original score
On a sad afternoon, nothing feels better than a classic Disney musical. Encanto is just that, with a stellar original album by Lin-Manuel Miranda.
The story revolves around a Columbian teenager who has to save the magic of her extended family though she has no powers of her fun. Don’t skip this heart-warming beauty at any cost, no matter how old you are.
10 The Eyes of Tammy Faye
Nominations – Best actress (Jessica Chastain), best makeup and hairstyling
Adapted from a 2000 documentary, the film focuses on Tammy Faye, the televangelist and her rise and fall along with her million-dollar empire. Watch the film particularly for Chastain’s performance.
11 Flee
Nominations – Best animated picture, best documentary feature
Flee is a distinctive story of a refugee using collages of animation and newsreel clips and footage following a man’s painful and traumatic journey to find a place he can call home. Riz Ahmed and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau are executive producers of the film.
12 The Hand of God
Nominations – Best international feature
Italian director Paulo Sorrentino’s The Hand of God is a memorable look at Naples, the city he grew up in, with a focus on the 1980s.
13 King Richard
Nominations – Best picture, best actor (Will Smith), best supporting actress (Aunjanue Ellis)
The film is a controversial look at the early lives of tennis superstar siblings Serena and Venus Williams. Will Smith shines as the father of the two rising stars in this Reinaldo Marcus Green directorial.
14 Licorice Pizza
Nominations – Best picture, best director (Paul Thomas Anderson)
Set in 1973 in the San Fernando Valley, Licorice Pizza is a coming-of-age comedy drama which narrates the love story of Alana Kane and Gary Valentine.
Alana Haim wins hearts with her performance and the film is supported by big names such as Sean Penn and Bradley Cooper.
15 The Lost Daughter
Nominations – Best actress (Olivia Colman), best supporting actress (Jessie Buckley)
Maggie Gyllenhaal adapts the Elena Ferrante novel of the same name into a psychological drama with brilliant performances. The Lost Daughter is the story of a divorced academician, who meets a mother-daughter family while on a vacation in Italy and it compels her to face her past.
16 Luca
Nominations – Best animated feature
Another heart-warming animated film from the house of Disney, Luca is a story of friendship and acceptance. It features a young boy spending one special summer in a beautiful village in the Italian Riviera until his secret comes to light.
17 Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom
Nominations – Best international feature
A young aspiring singer wishes to shift to Australia with his grandmother. But when his supervisor notices he is way behind in his work, he is transferred to a remote village named Lunana instead.
18 Mitchells VS. The Machines
Nominations – Best animated feature
This animated comedy revolves around the Mitchells, a dysfunctional family who have to now gear up to fight a robot apocalypse. It is not only a witty take on sci-fi comedy but also consistently entertaining and funny. Do give it a watch.
19 Nightmare Alley
Nominations – Best picture, best costume design
Based on the 1946 novel by William Lindsay Gresham, Nightmare Alley is a neo-noir psychological drama set in 1940s New York. A mind-reading showman meets a high-class psychoanalyst and what follows is nothing less than a cinematic treat.
20 Parallel Mothers
Nominations – Best actress (Penélope Cruz), best original score
When two women’s paths cross at a maternity ward, trauma and past experiences get intertwined and connected and leads to unexpected consequences in this drama.
21 The Power of the Dog
Nominations – Best picture, best director (Jane Campion), best actor (Benedict Cumberbatch and Jesse Plemons), best supporting actress (Kirsten Dunst)
An adaptation of Thomas Sage’s novel, The Power of the Dog is a detailed study of family tensions in the American West. The subject matter has been dealt with sensitivity and the star-cast has complimented the script quite well.
22 Raya and the Last Dragon
Nominations – Best animated feature

Disney is now further expanding its diversity by including characters from various races and colors, so we are getting more inclusive work from the house.
Raya and the Last Dragon, inspired by South Asian quest adventure trope is a delight to watch with Awkwafina and Kelly Marie Tran lending their voices to the characters.
23 Spencer
Nominations – Best actress (Kristen Stewart)
Pablo Larrain deals with the story of Princess Diana in this courageous take on the crisis that was her life.
The film focuses on her crumbling and problematic marriage to Prince Charles and how things change for Diana. Kristen Stewart received rave reviews for her performance, which is considered by many to be her career’s best work.
24 Tick Tick…Boom
Nominations – Best actor (Andrew Garfield), best film editing
This Netflix musical is based on playwright and musician Jonathan Larson and his life choices and ups and downs. The inspiring autobiographical drama features Andrew Garfield in one of his best performances.
25 The Tragedy of Macbeth
Nominations – Best actor (Denzel Washington), best cinematography

Another vigorously beautiful take on Shakespeare’s timeless tragedy is worth your attention and time because of its mind-boggling cinematography and visual delight.
The story is well known to us, but the performances and the visuals makes it worth revisiting again.
24 West Side Story
Nominations – Best picture, best director (Steven Spielberg), best supporting actress (Ariana DeBose)
Spielberg’s latest musical is the same in terms of plot – two lovers, united by passion but separated by circumstances of turmoil and hatred.
Set in 1957 New York City, West Side Story tells the tale of Maria and Tony as they fall madly in love with each other.
27 The Worst Person in the World
Nominations – Best international feature, best original screenplay
The feature film focuses on the life of a 30-year-old woman who is unable to make up her mind. The key feature of this film is the character development and how director Joachim Trier deals with the layers in the protagonist’s character.
