Starro Revealed As Main Villain In The Suicide Squad ‘Leaked’ Trailer

Warner Bros. released the new trailer for The Suicide Squad on Tuesday, but not exactly in the most conventional way. The trailer first surfaced online exclusively via YouTube advertisements. This included quite a few new glimpses at the film’s surprising but not unexpected villain, Starro.

In the trailer, Amanda Waller instructs Task Force X on their mission, telling them to eliminate all traces of Project Starfish. Throughout the trailer, tentacles and such can be seen, hinting at Starro’s appearance. The mini Starros can also be seen controlling the people it latches onto the faces of.

Starro (also known as Starro the Conqueror) made his first DC Comics appearance in Brave and the Bold #28 (1960). Starro is the first villain to face the original Justice League of America.

The actors from the film began ‘leaking’ a version of the trailer online after some people spotted it as YouTube Ads before WB finally dropping it. Director James Gunn posted the film’s poster including the whole squad in which ‘They’re Dying To Save The World.’

The Suicide Squad… Assemble. The ensemble of DC villains seen in the trailer includes Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin, and Harley Quinn. And of course, the ‘good guys’ returning include Colonel Rick Flag and Amanda Waller to keep the squad in check.

James Gunn talked to IGN, giving a detailed breakdown of the trailer,

I knew early on that I wanted to have Starro be one of the primary antagonists for this movie. He’s a character who I love from DC Comics. He is a giant walking, thinking, cerulean blue starfish. He is both utterly ridiculous and terrifying to me and has been terrifying since I was a very young person, but I also think he goes along with what’s happening in the rest of this movie. This isn’t a movie about good guys and bad guys. It’s a movie about shades of gray.

Gunn also talked about Bloodsport and Superman. In the comics, Bloodsport almost kills the Man of Steel in a 1987 story.

Bloodsport is in prison for putting Superman into the ICU with a kryptonite bullet. Yes, The Suicide Squad is a part of the DCEU, but I don’t know which Superman it was because I don’t cast the next Superman. So it could be Henry [Cavill]; it could be somebody else. It’s whoever people decide on other than me.

Sadly, it seems unlikely that we’ll get to see Superman in The Suicide Squad, but now we know we can blame Bloodsport for the delay in another Man of Steel movie.

The Suicide Squad is set for a release in theaters and on HBO Max on August 6.
