The Staircase Episode 5 Recap
The episode opens six months after Michael’s verdict, with him serving his sentence in prison. His face is covered in bruises as he struggles to adjust to life in prison. One of his fellow inmates tells him that the reason he got beat up is that he was assigned a single-occupancy cell on account of him being famous. It is also revealed that Sophie, the documentary editor, and Michael have been writing to each other all this time and have grown close to each other.
Meanwhile, Michael’s family experiences financial strain as his appeal keeps getting delayed and they end up having an estate sale in order to pay for his legal team. Sophie and Denis do not see eye to eye regarding editing certain scenes out of the documentary. Jean tries to stay neutral but it’s evident that he agrees with Sophie’s point of view. Sophie reveals that she’s been writing to Michael which only ends up angering Denis more.
In a flashback scene following Michael’s loss in the election, we see Michael open Margaret’s mail and get angry with her for her slipping grades. He tells her he won’t buy her a plane ticket to come home for Thanksgiving. When Kathleen finds out about this at a dinner meeting, she hints that she plans to take a break and let her sister host Thanksgiving, especially considering that all the kids won’t be attending.
