Expectations were admittedly low heading into The Rookie Season 7, especially after the lackluster conclusion of its sixth season.
However, the premiere episode, “The Shot,” managed to deliver a mixed bag of intrigue, missed opportunities, and groundwork for future episodes. Here’s a breakdown of how the premiere unfolded and what it means for the season ahead.
What Happens After Season 6’s Cliffhanger?
The Rookie Season 6 finale ended on a dramatic note, with dangerous criminals Oscar Hutchinson and Jason Wyler escaping prison, aided by the morally compromised Monica Stevens.
Naturally, fans expected these unresolved storylines to take center stage in the Season 7 premiere. Yet, “The Shot” only brushes past these pivotal events. The episode begins with the LAPD team raiding a house where they believe Jason might be hiding, but their efforts are fruitless.
After this, the episode largely abandons the storyline of Jason and Oscar’s whereabouts. Monica Stevens, a major player in the Season 6 cliffhanger, is also absent, though Angela Lopez mentions her involvement with Interpol in Bolivia.
While the stolen battlefield nuke storyline introduced in the premiere provides high stakes and exciting action, it feels more suited for a mid-season arc than a season opener. Without meaningful progress on the Season 6 cliffhangers, the premiere struggles to justify its status as a fresh chapter.
How Are Tim and Lucy Handling Their Relationship?
One of the most engaging aspects of The Rookie Season 7 premiere is the dynamic between Tim Bradford and Lucy Chen. Following their breakup in Season 6, fans have been eager to see how their relationship evolves.
“The Shot” smartly returns to a slow-burn approach, with Tim and Lucy navigating their professional and personal interactions with care. The subtle tension between them is palpable, enhanced by lingering looks and lighthearted competition.
In a delightful twist, both Tim and Lucy are now training officers with their own rookies, leading to a playful bet about who can train the better cop. This balance of camaraderie and unresolved romantic tension hints at the possibility of a rekindled relationship, but the writers wisely avoid rushing their reconciliation.
What’s the Deal With Aaron’s Exit?
One of the most disappointing elements of the premiere is the handling of Aaron Thorsen’s departure. After three seasons as a main character, his exit is reduced to a passing comment about his transfer to the North Hollywood station.
This abrupt and flimsy explanation does a disservice to both the character and Tru Valentino, the actor who brought him to life. Fans deserved a more thoughtful sendoff for a character who had become an integral part of the series.
Who Are the New Rookies?
The introduction of two new rookies, Miles Penn and Seth Ridley, adds fresh energy to the cast. Miles, assigned to Tim, is a seasoned cop from a small Texas town with aspirations for greater challenges in Los Angeles.
Seth, under Lucy’s guidance, is an eager and inexperienced officer with a strong desire to help others. The two rookies are complete opposites, and their interactions with their training officers promise to be a highlight of the season.
While Aaron’s exit leaves a noticeable void, the new additions offer potential for compelling character arcs.
What Can We Expect Moving Forward?
Although “The Shot” leaves much to be desired in addressing lingering plotlines, it lays a foundation for future episodes.
Jenna Dewan’s Bailey Nune is notably absent, as her character is deployed with the National Guard, but she is expected to return in Episode 3. Her storyline will likely intertwine with Jason’s eventual reappearance, creating opportunities for heightened drama.
And, Finally…
The interestingly evolving dynamic between Tim and Lucy, the development of the new rookies, and the unresolved threats posed by Oscar and Monica provide plenty of material for the season to explore.
The Rookie Season 7 may not have started with a bang, but it holds promise for a compelling and character-driven journey.
