The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 1 is currently airing with weekly episodes every Friday on Prime Video. While Season 1 is only two episodes in, with Episode 3 coming out on September 9, showrunner J.D. Payne has revealed updates for Season 2.
The spinoff series, based on the fantasy novels by J.R.R. Tolkien, premiered on September 2, bringing back the beautiful visuals and lands of Middle Earth. The show, set 3000 years before The Hobbit and LOTR films, will capture the events after the First Age war and the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron.
The show’s first two episodes have gained positive reviews from critics, but the show was the latest victim of the review-bombing trend. It is unclear what the fans’ honest opinion is, as the TV series currently stands at a 37% approval rating before Amazon disabled comments and reviews.
But fans have taken agreeably to the show’s story, the return to Tolkien’s world of fantasy, and hopes for the upcoming six episodes are quite high. Only time will tell if the fantasy drama will rise to the standards set in the first two episodes or fall behind.
Even with the release of Season 1, fans knew the show was already booked for a five-season slot. Showrunners Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne had disclosed that they have set some essential plot points to be explored in the upcoming four seasons.
The showrunners have stated that they have already decided on certain pit stops in the story but have left room to explore. While some things are set in stone, including the final shot of the five-season series, every plotline will be explored to deliver the best version of the story of Middle Earth’s Second Age.
The show’s first season has only introduced new and old characters with six more episodes, but showrunner Payne has already revealed that Season 2 is not far away.
According to his interview with RadioTimes, Payne disclosed that the scripts for Season 2 have been written and finalized, and the filming for the upcoming season will commence in a few weeks.
We’ve written our drafts [for Season 2]. We are a couple of weeks away from starting production.
Fans have much content to look forward to in the LOTR spinoff series, which will traverse the realms and stories of Middle Earth that were never seen before in the film franchise.
