The Lord of the Rings spinoff series is currently streaming weekly episodes on Prime Video, and J.R.R. Tolkien’s work remains as beautiful, mysterious, and riveting as ever. Episode 4 came out on September 16, 2022, and marked the halfway point of the eight-part series.
The episode has laid out the beginning of Sauron’s rise intricately, with some suggesting Adar, who was introduced as the orcs’ revered leader in the previous episode, is another name for the Dark Lord. But Adar turns out to be an elf turned evil, which is rare if not unheard of in Tolkien’s world of fantasy.
Fan theories suggest that Maeglin, an elfen supporter of Morgoth in the olden times, might be Adar in The Rings of Power, but for now, that remains unconfirmed. Let’s return to the episode for now.
At the beginning of the episode, Miriel had a vision of a big wave crashing upon Numenor and destroying her kingdom. She pinpointed the friendly relations with the elfen kingdom as the key to Numenor’s destruction, revealing the reason Numenor severed their connection with Valar.
Galadriel tried to persuade Miriel, and Miriel decided to share the vision with Galadriel for the elf to better understand her decision as Queen Regent. She has Galadriel touch the Palantiri stone, which shows impending prophecies of doom.
Galadriel, shaken after the vision, implored the Queen Regent to reconsider, to stand in solidarity with the Southlands instead of hiding in fear. Miriel stands firm in her decision, to prevent the destruction of Numenor as they know it, but the following morning, she changes her tune.
The tears of Valar, as they had flown in her vision, floated in the air as Galadriel was being led away. Miriel understood that to avoid destruction, Numenor must stand with the elf and Valar. She agrees to lend Numenor’s forces to the Southlands and accompany them to destroy Adar and his orc army.
Meanwhile, despite his mother disallowing him, Theo returns to Hordern to collect rations with Rowan in tow. But Theo is captured by the orcs and he tries to escape with an injured leg, only to have Arondir save him and bring him back to Ostirith.
There, Walderg finds Theo and confronts him about the hilt he stole from his barn. Walderg warns Theo that something dangerous awaits the young lad.
Walderg’s ominous connection to the Stranger’s fall from the sky and Sauron’s rising had chills running down every fan’s spine in anticipation of the coming battles. Adar is already searching Sauron’s hilt and will level Ostirith for what he covets.
With the latest episode’s end, we are one step closer to the possible doom of the Southlands, the reveal of the true identities of Adar and The Stranger, and the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron.
The Rings of Power will be back with a new episode on Prime Video on September 23, 2022.
