At the time of last year’s Prime Video premiere of The Rings of Power, one of the viewers’ biggest questions was who and where Sauron was. By the end of the first season of the Lord of the Rings spinoff, the audience had its shocking answer, though that build-up almost seemed predictable.
In the season 1 finale, Halbrand revealed to Galadriel that he was Sauron and attempted to sway her to his side, ruling the new age with her beside him. Galadriel had always feared that “should she go to the dark side, things will be catastrophic” – at least, that’s how Morfyyd Clark saw her character.
Collider asked The Rings of Power star whether Sauron’s offer of power indeed tempted her character, and she explained how she wanted it to be “ambiguous.” Read her full statement from the interview below:
I don’t know. I kind of want to keep it ambiguous, as well, but I think the thing with Galadriel is that she knows that should she go to the dark side, things will be catastrophic. I’ve been thinking a lot about what the gift of foresight would actually feel like, and I’m like, ‘Is it just like increased anxiety in a way?’
Because you have all these ideas of what could be, what could be, what could be, and I think one of her big ‘what could be’s’ is like, ‘What if I’m bad?’ But I don’t know. I mean, they definitely vibe because they’re very powerful, but I’m not sure.
Even though Sauron reveals his identity to Galadriel, the Elven warrior does not spill the beans, not even when Celebrimbor finishes making the rings Sauron had hoped for. Here, I want to take Galadriel’s side – she isn’t in shock; it’s a calculated move because once the rings are complete, she’d have leverage over the dark overlord.
Sauron had already made his way to the Southlands, redesigned by Adar into Mordor, which he would claim for himself no matter how many he’ll have to slay or manipulate. In season 2 of The Rings of Power, Sauron and Galadriel will remain on opposite sides of the battle between good and evil, though I’m sure Sauron will attempt to sway her again.
Sauron will surely return for the forging of the other rings, of which we have seventeen more to go. To guarantee his ascension as the sole ruler of Middle Earth, he must keep nudging Celebrimbor in the right direction. However, only a fool would don the same disguise – he’ll be sure to leave the name of Halbrand behind.
So, will Galadriel be able to spot the traitorous dark lord and stop him in time before he slips into the throne destiny has laid for him? The Rings of Power season 2 is currently in production, so you might get your answer sooner than you think – but don’t think this year. Stay tuned to Cine Dope for more.
