After The Rings of Power season 1 finale, LOTR fans can finally put a face to one of the greatest antagonists of the franchise.
The finale reveals Halbrand’s betrayal and exposes him as Sauron. Following the finale’s release, Charlie Vickers, who plays the said character in The Rings of Power, teased Sauron’s story in the upcoming seasons of the series.
In conversation with ScreenRant, Vickers first explained his excitement at playing Sauron at “his repentance stage” and how the dark lord has much more to do. In this explanation, he mentions the making of more rings, Numenor’s destruction, and the battle of the Second Age.
He has a shitload of rings to make, and he gets to go to Númenor, and he orchestrates the downfall of Númenor. Then he has to take another form and go and fight in the Battle of the Last Alliance. The battle at the end of the Second Age.
The Sauron actor also explains how he is not entirely privy to the showrunner’s plan but is excited to take Sauron’s story further.
The showrunners have a definite plan, and I don’t know their goals as to how it’ll unfold, but I loved playing him in this repentance stage. Whether repentance is genuine or not is open to interpretation. But I think it’s going to be really cool now that he’s kind of out there. And it’s like, I’m back. I’ve been lingering. I’ve been coming back very slowly. And now, thanks to Galadriel, I’m back. And I’m excited to play that.
The Prime Video series focuses on the rise of The Dark Lord in the Second Age and the trials of Middle-Earth in that period from the eyes of brave Galadriel. The finale dropped many easter eggs and delved into the past of characters we’ve come to know, fear and love.
Sauron shows a keen interest in Galadriel, who he sees as an equal in some ways and also as a medium to gain more power to rule Middle Earth eventually. So, he will surely try to get her on his side, but for now we expect him to steer clear of her till her anger has simmered down.
The Evil overlord will conquer Mordor first, causing trouble for Adar. He will then eventually move across Middle-Earth, strategically claiming it as his own.
Sauron has much to achieve in his life, and the showrunners’ plan spans across five seasons, so we can expect to see Vickers’ Dark Lord slowly but steadily gaining power.
