The most awaited FRIENDS Reunion aired on HBO Max on May 27th, 2021 and fans over the world cannot stop celebrating their favourite show once again.
The reunion was an emotional joyride. We saw the cast of six friends revisit old shoot locations, share their memories and also reveal some interesting gossip about each other! Whether you are a fan of Ross and Rachel or Monica and Chandler, there’s some scoop for you.
Monica Geller (Courtney Cox) and Chandler Bing (Matthew Perry) is one of television’s most loved couples and the best part of FRIENDS alongside the Ross and Rachel relationship. The two got together for the first time at the end of Season 4, when the gang goes to London to celebrate Ross and Emily’s wedding.
Now that’s what we already knew. But here’s what the reunion had in store for us: Apparently, Chandler and Monica were never meant to be a permanent thing. The writers intended for it to be a one-time thing the gang could laugh about, but the audience’s overwhelming love made them reconsider their decision.
Remember Season 7, “The One With The Truth About London” where Monica reveals she was actually looking for Joey to hook up with on the night but hooked up with Chandler instead because she did not find him?
We all wanted to give Chandler a hug after that reveal despite Joey’s mischievous grins. Seems like that was not all. There is some more truth that we need to find out about Mondler but this time, it favours Chandler. I promise!
The One That Could Have Been With Mondler
Marta Kauffman, one of the creators of FRIENDS revealed in the reunion episode that Monica and Chandler were not supposed to be a permanent couple. They hooked up in the end of Season 4 and it was just meant to be another side plot line which the gang could joke about later.
They intended for Chandler to go “Could we be any more ridiculous?” and Monica going “I Know!”. Well, Mondler (a ship name for Monica and Chandler given by fans) fans were definitely thanking their stars that the writers decided to change their decision!
Fun fact: The makers intended on making Joey and Monica the main pair of the show when the series began. Laughter in the background moment? Definitely.
Can we imagine FRIENDS without Mondler being a pair? Season 7 involved all of Monica’s wedding planning. In one scene, she tells Chandler, “If you call our wedding a party one more time, you’re not invited.” Admit it, we all loved Mondler at one point!
Imagine not getting to see some of the most beautiful moments of the show, such as the one where Chandler convinces Erica to let them adopt her baby, the proposal scene or even the iconic “The One Where Everyone Finds Out”.
So, what made the writers change their mind about Mondler? Us!
The One That Changed Mondler For Us
In a hilarious behind the scene blooper in the reunion, we see the familiar scene from Season 4: In London, we discover Monica and Chandler in bed together the morning after they got together. But the fun bit was how Courtney and Matthew were waiting for the live audience to do their thing after the scene was over.
Honestly, you have to watch the bit to know what I am talking about!
Remember the cheers and claps that went on in the background when we first see Mondler together? Well, that was the first step towards Mondler becoming a thing.
Kauffman revealed that since Mondler got together at the end of Season 4, they had some time to think about how they wanted to proceed with the track. Even throughout the early episodes of Season 5, where Mondler keep their relationship a secret, the makers were still not sure whether to actually make Mondler a thing.
It is us, the fans who helped them make up their mind. Courtney and Matthew shared such an easy-going, fun chemistry that the fans instantly loved them as a pair. The overwhelming reaction of the fans made the writers change their mind about Mondler being a temporary fling, and Chandler got the love of his life!
The One Where Mondler Is A Thing
The rest is history! I would say it was one of the best decisions for the makers to make Mondler a pair. Monica and Chandler were friends at first, and in Season 3, Chandler even suggests “Worst comes to worst, I will be your boyfriend!” and Monica laughs.
So, despite all the jokes, the reaction of the fans, the audience’s opinion and response shaped the course of Mondler’s relationship and gave us some of the most memorable moments of the show.
Monica and Chandler perfectly complement each other and is one of the most relatable couples I have watched. Perry and Cox share such a beautiful chemistry that it is hard to not like anything about Mondler.
The reunion ended with the cast answering where they think their characters would be today. Courtney looks at Matthew sitting next to her and says “You are still making me laugh so hard!” and Matthew in classic Chandler vibe goes, “I am glad I have some contribution in our lives.” Could Mondler be anymore adorable?
It’s time to thank the audience back in the 90s we got Mondler to cherish forever.
