Even though the PS4 sold 40 million lesser units than the PS2, PlayStation has now sold more PS4 games than PS2 titles.
Sony’s recent report for the last financial year shows that PlayStation has had a very good year. So far, it has sold 7.8 million PS5s outdoing what the PS4 managed to do in its first entire fiscal year. The PS4 wasn’t left behind though. Along with reaching 115.9 million in terms of lifetime sales, it also surpassed a long-held PS2 record, and a very significant one at that.
For nearly two decades, the PS2 had held the record for most video games sold by a single console, ever. Well, the PS4 now owns that title with 1.577 billion PS4 games having been sold since the consoles launch in 2013. The PS2 had managed to sell 1.537 billion games during its lifetime.
That’s impressive for several reasons, for both consoles in question. For one, the PS2 holds that record while relying purely on physical sales. This fact cannot be emphasized enough and is also one of the reasons the PS4 was able to overtake the PS2, despite selling fewer units. What makes the PS4’s record impressive is that it doesn’t take into account the free games downloaded via a PS Plus subscription.
While talks about the death of the PS4 clock battery were slowly ebbing, news of this record may shine a spotlight on the matter. Twitter account Does It Play stated that if PlayStation ever shut down the PS4 servers, once the clock battery dies, which is inevitable, all the games both physical and digital will be rendered unplayable. That would account for 1.5 billion games being lost, forever.
However, it seems Sony is truly trying to find a fix for this situation. We’re hoping that they will be able to alter it through an update, or better yet, keep the PS4 servers running indefinitely and completely eliminate the issue.
This doesn’t seem like a viable option though, as Sony has been stating they will be shutting various online stores later this year. Backlash after the reveal resulted in the decision being revoked for the PS3 and PS Vita stores.
