The Politician Season 2 – Premiere Info & News Updates

A lot has changed since The Politician first hit Netflix last year. Back then, maybe the college kids in the US wouldn’t have imagined why a fellow grad student would want to run for state senator and if he would even be constitutionally allowed. However, given the current state of affairs, it seems understandable.

Ryan Murphy, how very prescient of you!

The second season of The Politician is set to premiere on Netflix June 19. The latest trailer was released on June 15 for the upcoming season.

The Politicians Season 2 – Official Trailer

1. When is second season out?

The second season of The Politician will premiere on June 19, Midnight PT or California Time. If you’re on the East coast, it will be a late night premiere at 3 am ET.

2. Where can you stream The Politician?

Of course, Netflix. This Original was created and produced by the heavyweight Ryan Murphy. The first season is already streaming on Netflix.

3. What’s new with season 2?

The chic, slick and atrociously snobbish Payton Hobart is back with a fight much bigger than college elections ahead of him. Played by the amazing Ben Platt, Payton is going to overcome the bittersweet victory, failed romance and a shocking loss of wealth.

He is preparing to occupy the New York state Senate instead and will be pitted against the incumbent Dede Standish (Judith Light) and her bulldog campaign advisor Hadassah Gold (Bette Midle). But more on that later. You can find the show’s official synopsis at the end of this article.

As we can see in the latest trailer, the fight is not going to be any bit easier than Payton’s last. The “22-year-old rich kid” has made it from the high school pool to the upstate river at least if not for the ocean yet.

Nevertheless, we expect for Payton to receive all the support he did. We know that because this Ryan Murphy production was ordered for two seasons at the first go, a rarity even by Netflix standards.

So obviously the cast and crew must have signed up for both the seasons together. Expect most of the cast to return in the next season.

In fact there are a bunch of new additions to the cast.

In a recent interview with IndieWire Lucy Boynton (who plays Payton’s arch-nemesis Astrid) spoke of season two, “You know [Season two is] gonna be so different from Season one. It has to be, it’s Ryan,” she began. “The game will definitely change. High school rules don’t apply anymore, so to see how they adapt to that will be really interesting.”

Ben Platt was also keen to air his thoughts, confirming “season two will follow that election”. He added: “I would love to see what a ‘healthy’ actual human relationship might do for Payton, like a romantic one.”

As the game gets bigger, even the presentation of it will get more mature. That means all those lovely songs that were in season one will no longer be there.

“I’ve only read the first couple of episodes, but so far [season two] isn’t musical,” Platt said. “And if it is, it’ll be a very similar situation where only when Payton would organically be singing in his life would we try to put a song in there.”

4. Official synopsis

As a long-time incumbent and greatly admired Senate Majority Leader with no-nonsense Chief of Staff, Hadassah Gold (Bette Midler) at her side, Dede’s re-election was supposed to be easy, but Payton – who sees this as the next step on his path to the Presidency – must decide what kind of politician he ultimately wants to be in order to succeed, even if that means exposing secrets, lies, and a throuple.

Meanwhile, his mother, Georgina Hobart (Gwyneth Paltrow), makes a momentous decision that threatens to upstage him and everything he’s hoping to accomplish.

But if Payton wants to rise above petty politics and succeed without compromising his character, he must find his voice and strengthen his political message to inspire and excite the voters.

5. What does the future entail?

Murphy has often shared his intent of five seasons of The Politician, with each one focused on a particular race, climaxing with the US Presidential Elections.

But then, we aren’t sure of it yet since there is no official announcement. A lot will depend on how the second season performs because for the third one, Netflix will furnish a fresh contract. Fans are excited for President Payton, though!
