Director Kim Jeong-hoon’s The Pirates 2 achieved an incredible feat of surpassing 1 million moviegoers. The sequel, The Pirates: The Last Royal Treasure, was released on January 26 and achieved the feat in ten days.
The craze around the adventure movie made the achievement look predictable to viewers. It has also become the first Korean film to achieve the one-million mark.
The achievement holds more significance because of the strict COVID laws and social distancing guidelines.
Additionally, The Pirates 2 also ranked in the top for ten consecutive days, showcasing the power and attraction of the adventure-comedy.
The movie grossed 7.99 million USD at the time of writing. The earnings make the movie 21 million USD away from the highest grosser of 2021, Escape from Mogadishu.
The Pirated 2 even grossed the best opening for a film in 2022 with 120,025 admissions in the box office.
The Pirates 2 has a star-studded cast of Kang Ha-neul, Han Hyo-joo, Lee Kwang-soo, EXO’s Sehun, Kwon Sang-woo, Chase Soo-bin, and more, that make the movie even more enriching.
With the Lunar New Year holidays in motion, it seems like South Korean citizens are finding their ways to celebrate theater in the new normal while letting entertainment be their respite.
South Korean cinema also took a big hit in 2021, when foreign films overtook the domestic markets for the first time in over a decade, reported Variety.
The former had earned top eight out of 10 highest-grossing ranks for the year. One of them was Escape from Mogadishu, while the other was Sinkhole.
The Pirates 2 achieving one million admissions despite the pandemic restrictions brings in a sense of hope for the South Korean movie industry.
The first installment of The Pirates was released in 2014 and starred Son Ye-jin (Crash Landing on You) and Kim Nam-gil (Memoir of a Murderer) and generated favorable reviews too.
The production for The Pirates sequel was announced in December 2018, but the filming started only in July 2020 due to cast and script changes, eventually releasing last month.
