The first three episodes of The Peripheral have been very topsy-turvy. The production design, world-building, VFX, CGI, etc., have been impressive. But it has faltered in other places like character development, dialogues, and especially the character work of the protagonist, Flynne Fisher (Chloe Grace Moretz). She looks flat at times.
If you have watched Black Mirror, you should be well acquainted with the undertone of The Peripheral. It shows a horror-filled dystopian world where technology has become our nemesis.
1. Episode 4 Synopsis/Speculations
The series is at a critical junction now, and many things have started to unfold. Let’s begin with the end.
The last episode ended with several loose ends, especially concerning the peripheral’s working. We know that jumping back and forth into the other world causes Flynne neural damage. In episode 2, she couldn’t move her limbs properly after one such incident.
Till episode 2, Flynne was using Burton’s peripheral. Any injury to the peripheral didn’t affect the real-life Flynne.
But in the last episode, the sonic gun hits Flynne’s new peripheral. That leaves real-life Flynn with a black eye.
Do different peripherals have different properties? Flynne’s new peripheral seems stronger than Burton’s. Is that a good bargain? Can destroying her peripheral kill her in real life?
Episode 4 should give us more insight into the life of Aelita. Aelita has been chiefly a shady figure till now. Adult Wilf and Mr. West try to find out the time at which Aelita is hiding. They have a clue which is a place “where snow last fell in London.”
It takes time for them to figure out that ‘snow’ isn’t referring to snowfall but the death of John Snow, a 17th-century physician (not the one from Game of Thrones). Will they find Aelita in episode 4? Or will the clue lead to a dead end?
Coming to the Fishers, Jasper gets tricked into keeping tabs on Flynne and Burton. Episode 4 will likely tell us how good a spy he is. He’ll have to find answers from the Fisher family without appearing suspicious. A little slip-up, and he will not live to tell the tale.
Flynne’s big mistake in episode 3 might come back to bite her in the future. She confides everything in Billy Ann. Ann is Jasper’s husband, who is Corbell’s nephew. She makes it much easier for Corbell to trace and kill her. It will be interesting to see how this subplot shapes up.
Will Cherise contact Corbell so that they team up to kill the Fishers? She might even threaten him to do her bidding without the ten million pounds he was offered in episode 2.
Even though this series is not at the pinnacle of its genre, interesting things have started to unfold of late. Episode 4 might have a lot of answers for us!
