NBCU Chairman Susan Rovner has been teasing The Office reboot, since 2020 and now claims it only depends on one person. In a recent interview with the TV’s Top 5 podcast (via The Hollywood Reporter), Susan Rovner opened up about how Greg Daniels is the only one who can revive the American sitcom on the streaming channel.
In her interview, Rovner said, “Whatever Greg Daniels wants to do, I’m standing by with open arms.” The popular mockumentary rose to popularity again after the show hit on Netflix, but now that NBCU’s repurchased the rights for the show, we do have some hope to see the reunion of the iconic characters.
But is Greg Daniels up to the task, or even willing? Daniels has previously stated that a reboot is “not possible” due to his scheduling issues, which is justifiable since he is already involved with many projects like The King of Hill and Best Buds. But recently, he did broach the subject of a reboot!
Daniels, who was the showrunner for the show’s first four seasons and an executive producer for the rest, claims “it’s hard to tell” if people are really up for it. The screenwriter explained that the possible reboot would be “an extension” of the existing show. Read his full quote below:
I can’t tell whether fans would want more of it, and when I say more of it, I don’t think it would be the same characters. I think it would just be sort of like an extension of the universe, you know what I mean, like the way Mandalorian is like an extension of Star Wars. But I don’t know if that would be something people would want or not; it’s hard to tell.
But it’s not only Daniels whose schedule is packed to the brim! The show’s primary star Steve Carrell is involved with multiple projects like the Despicable Me franchise and Space Force. And other stars like B.J. Novak, Mindy Kaling, and John Krasinski also have quite a few projects lined up, leaving them with no time for a reunion on the small screen.
While NBCU is ready to greenlight The Office reboot, it might not be possible to shoot it anytime soon. But if we receive some insight from Daniels, we’ll share it with you.
