If you ask anyone with a basic interest in films about which blonde bombshell defined the Golden Era of Hollywood, more often than not, you’ll get the same answer. Chances are you’re thinking of that name yourself right now—Marilyn Monroe.
As glamourous and full of life the stunning actress’ career was, Monroe’s mysterious death at such an early age has always been much talked about. Although it was initially ruled as suicide, her fans were convinced there was more to it.
With this year marking the 60th anniversary of Monroe’s death, Netflix has taken the responsibility to bring to light the rare, unheard tapes connected to what conspired behind the mystery.
The streamer’s latest true-crime documentary, The Mystery of Marilyn Monroe: The Unheard Tapes, will dig into the icon’s life from the start to discover the truth about her death.
The trailer begins with Monroe’s dazzling smile as a woman’s voice is heard in the background, “The true things rarely get into circulation. It’s usually the false things.”
Monroe allegedly overdosed on drugs at the young age of 36 in 1962. Two decades later, in 1982, her case was reopened. The Netflix trailer teases to unearth details of it all with never-before-heard interviews.
The documentary film will not hold back as it will talk about every single detail, including conspiracy theories, drugs, wiretaps, cover-ups, communism, JFK, the FBI, and John Edgar Hoover’s involvement.
One mysterious voice is heard saying, “I can’t say anything, and I knew it all.” While another adds that searching for Marilyn’s past and the truth is like “getting into the lion’s den.”
The documentary is directed by Emma Cooper and executive produced by Chris Smith. The synopsis reads,
Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe’s tragic death spawned conspiracies and rumors for decades, often overshadowing her talent and shrewdness. By piecing together her final weeks, days, and hours through previously unheard recordings of those who knew her best, the film illuminates more of her glamorous, complicated life, and offers a new perspective on that fateful night.
Monroe has been at the center of many films and documentaries, including the upcoming feature, Blonde. However, Netflix’s documentary promises a deeper dive from the very beginning of her story.
The Mystery of Marilyn Monroe: The Unheard Tapes premieres on Netflix on April 27.
