HBO’s The Investigation came to an end on Tuesday night. The Danish show, which is a six-part series, investigates the 2017 murder mystery of journalist Kim Wall. Featuring Soren Malling, Pilou Asbaek, and Pernilla August in leading roles, the show directed by Tobias Lindholm has been a hit amongst native audiences and foreign viewers alike.
Kim Wall, who boarded a submarine belonging to Danish engineer Peter Madsen on August 10, 2017, was reported missing the next day after the Nautilus did not resurface at the Refshaleoen harbour. The submarine was later discovered in a sunken state underwater with pieces of Wall’s dismembered body in surrounding areas.
Madsen was later charged with murder and sentenced to life imprisonment by the Copenhagen City Court on April 25, 2018. The Investigation looks into the case and the court rulings that followed the final decision regarding Madsen’s conviction.
However, the series does not feature any of the real-life figures from the case and mainly shines a spotlight behind the scenes of the investigative process. The final episode, which wrapped up the show, focused on the last attempts made by Chief Prosecutor Jakob Buch-Jepsen, played by Asbaek, and Jens Moller, played by Malling, to look for more evidence that would help bring the accused under the law.
Their success leads to the accused’s imprisonment but strips away all the glory of their win. Instead, it takes a more realistic turn, as can be seen from the empty conference room, which becomes reminiscent of the horrific crime and the trial and tribulations gone through to bring justice to Wall.
The Investigation‘s finale thus leaves mixed emotions reeling through the audience’s minds who try to come to terms with the triumph of the prosecution, all the while accepting that the ending is not really as glorious as it seems to be.
Speculation for a season 2 has been going around for a bit but there has been no confirmation as of yet. However, since many renowned mini-series have been renewed before, there is a chance The Investigation could follow suit. But if the show were to be renewed, it’s most likely it’ll pick up a new criminal case to investigate.
The Investigation is now streaming in its entirety on HBO Max.
