The trailer for the upcoming Christmas horror comedy, The Mean One, is out now and features one of Dr. Seuss’ most popular characters, The Grinch in an unexpected avatar of a serial killer. The upcoming film is a parody of the popular 1957 children’s book by Dr. Seuss, titled How The Grinch Stole Christmas.
The Mean One stars David Howard Thornton as the Christmas killer version of The Grinch. The unauthorized parody is set in the small, quiet town of Newville, where a child named Cindy sees her parents get murdered by The Grinch on Christmas.
Twenty years later, the so-called Christmas killer is back, which gives Cindy a new purpose to find the serial killer and stop him from ruining another Christmas. The trailer features the titular monster as a ravenous green creature in the clothes of Santa Claus.
The trailer begins on the night Cindy You-Know-Who’s parents were murdered by The Grinch. Twenty years later, an adult Cindy is still terrified of Christmas for this reason. So, when the Christmas killer returns once again to begin a murderous rampage, Cindy is determined to stop the beast.
The 1 minute-23-seconds-long trailer shows multiple scenes of violence and glimpses of the infamous “Christmas Killer”, who looks exactly like popular depictions of the iconic character, The Grinch. Check out the trailer below –
Since the killer always wears the mask of The Grinch, the police could never land on a reliable description of the man. Thus, he was never caught. The rest of the trailer features scenes where the killer murders people on Christmas and finally faces Cindy, who wants to stop him from destroying lives once again.
The trend of taking up iconic characters from children’s literature, films and show and giving them a bloody twist has been quite common recently. Films such as Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, Bambi: The Reckoning and Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare follow the same genre.
The Mean One is the fourth adaptation of How the Grinch Stole Christmas on screen. The first one was the 1966 animated television special, followed by the 2000s full-length live-action feature film and the 2018 animated remake.
All three previous adaptations, however, have remained true to Dr. Seuss’ original story. The Mean One gives it a criminal twist by portraying the iconic character of The Grinch as a serial killer. Only time will tell how this interpretation clicks with the audience.
The Mean One will release in theaters on December 9, 2022.
