The major change that we see in The Book of Boba Fett is the reunion of Din Djarin and Grogu. So, Season 3 premiere begins on a completely different note and picks up the story after the events of The Book of Boba Fett.
In this article, we give you a detailed recap of the much-awaited season 3 premiere of The Mandalorian, breaking down the ending and figuring out what it means for future episodes.
The Mandalorian Season 3 Premiere Recap
Season 3 of Disney+’s Star Wars show began with an event where the Armorer led a Mandalorian ceremony on an unknown planet, which was rudely interrupted by a colossal sea turtle. Despite the Mandalorians’ efforts, utilizing blasters, heavy artillery, flamethrowers, and explosives, their attacks proved futile. The situation only diffused when Din Djarin made his heroic entry in his N-1 Starfighter, launching torpedoes at the creature from above the clouds.
Despite saving the day, Din’s actions did not win him any favor with the Armorer, who asserted that he was no longer a true Mandalorian due to his decision to remove his helmet. However, Din remained determined to redeem himself by purifying himself in the living waters beneath Mandalore’s mines.
To support his case, he presented physical evidence proving that Mandalore was not permanently contaminated by the Purge’s merciless attacks. He presented an artifact obtained by a traveler who had safely visited the planet. After examining the evidence, the Armorer approved Din’s mission to seek redemption.
The Mandalorian then visits Nevarro, where he is greeted warmly by High Magistrate Greef Karga. Karga extends a gracious offer to his friend, presenting him with a prime piece of land outside the newly developed “jewel of the Outer Rim” and the opportunity to live a comfortable life as a landed gentry. For reference, this is the same scene we saw a glimpse of in an official pre-release clip from season 3.
Now, Mando declines Karga’s tempting offer, revealing that he has other pressing matters to attend to. Their conversation is cut short by a disturbance caused by a group of pirates outside Nevarro’s cantina, which now functions as a school.
Despite Karga’s efforts to negotiate a peaceful resolution, the pirates, led by Vane, insist on visiting their former haunt for a drink. This results in a gunfight, during which Karga and Mando emerge victorious, leaving only Vane alive.
After Cara Dune’s successful mission, where she apprehends Moff Gideon, she was promoted to Special Forces, leaving the marshal position in Nevarro vacant. Greef Karga offers the role to the Mandalorian, but he declines, instead expressing his desire to locate IG-11, the bounty hunter droid he had previously teamed up with to locate the Child.
However, IG-11 now exists as a combination of statue and droid remnants in the town square. Mando attempts to reactivate the droid himself, but it unexpectedly lunges at Grogu, prompting him and Greef to subdue it. In an attempt to repair IG-11, Greef enlists the help of Anzellans, who require a specific part that Mando sets out to find.
While leaving Nevarro, the Mandalorian takes the opportunity to teach Grogu how to fly the Starfighter, possibly hinting at a future plot point. During their lesson, they realize that Vane and his pirate crew are pursuing them.
Mando uses impressive tactics to take out some of the attackers, but soon discovers that Vane has led him into a trap set by the pirate king Gorian Shard, who commands a powerful cruiser. Despite the odds against him, Mando skillfully pilots his ship to safety by engaging the hyperdrive before Shard’s crew can fire upon him.
Mando makes his way to Kalevala, a planet located in the Mandalore system, where he encounters Bo-Katan in the throne room. When he inquires as to why she is not leading the Mandalorians, Bo explains that her followers split off after she failed to claim the Darksaber, taking Gideon’s cruiser with them.
Bo disagrees with Mando’s plan to redeem himself but doesn’t dissuade him from his goal. Instead, she provides him with crucial information about the location of the mines, which are situated beneath the civic center at Sundari.
The Mandalorian Season 3 Premiere Ending Explained
The Mandalorian season 3 episode 1 reveals the events following the timeline after The Book of Boba Fett. Nevarro has undergone significant changes, led by the transformed Karga, now the High Magistrate.
Din’s agreement with the Armorer regarding his atonement for Mandalore’s safety drives him and Grogu on their current mission, leading them to attempt to revive IG-11. Despite their failure, they continue their journey to Kalevala to join Kryze’s mission to Mandalore.
Bo-Katan’s forces have abandoned her due to the absence of the Darksaber, currently in Din’s possession. The episode ends with a hint of a potential conflict between Bo-Katan and Din and Grogu. Fans of Star Wars will undoubtedly keep a close eye on the series to see how this storyline progresses throughout the rest of the season.
