Elendil is more upset about the king’s passing than his son, while his daughter Eärien (Ema Horvath) tries to console him in Númenor. Queen Miriel (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) and Pharazôn (Trystan Gravelle) arrive for the funeral, with Pharazôn drawing attention to himself despite the solemn occasion.

Miriel is approached by a grieving mother on the dais who has no one to mourn. Miriel listens to her and offers empathy before Elendil intervenes. Will her empathy serve her well as she begins her rule over Númenor?

Pharazôn finds Miriel in the king’s old chambers. He asks her to choose between red and white for her coronation attire, symbolizing the future and past of Númenor. Miriel’s decision remains uncertain. She plans to wear white like her father and hopes to see an eagle during the ceremonies, despite Pharazôn preferring red to symbolize the new ruler’s arrival.

Pharazôn meets Eärien, Kemen, and Lord Belzagar at the pub. Kemen loudly declares the Queen unfit to rule because she is blind. Belzagar agrees and tells Pharazôn that many almost chose him to take the throne because they thought his claim was stronger. Pharazôn complains that “many” is insufficient, and Eärien responds that she might know how to persuade more people to change their minds.

Isildur’s friend Valandil (played by Alex Tarrant) interrupts the meeting, furious that they are all plotting against Miriel. He reminds them of the danger in the Southlands and warns Kemen that he will have to answer to him if he disobeys the Queen.

After revealing something illicit, Eärien’s humiliation is short-lived. Miriel is then seen searching for an object with the bangle she stole from her father, which also happens to be the key to his tower – the Palantir.

2. Middle-earth Gets Ready for Battle

Adar (Sam Hazeldine) prepares his Orcs for battle against Sauron. He tells a worried Orc that they can never be truly safe while he is alive. The Rings of Power gives the Orcs a human touch, as one expresses concerns to Adar and then returns to check on his family. Later, a troll arrives at their camp with a skull in hand, intent on finding Sauron.

Celebrimbor invites Durin and Disa to visit him in Eregion. He proposes that the power in the rings could help the Dwarf-lords heal the mountain and assist them in battles. Celebrimbor offers to make the rings in exchange for the priceless ore once they realize that mithril is required.

Durin is hesitant to discuss the issue with his father, King Durin. Annatar reassures him that the agreement will benefit their kingdom and may heal the rift. Without Elrond’s guidance, Durin is reluctant to strike a deal, and Annatar’s praise makes the Dwarf suspicious. Disa requests time to think things over to avoid a fight, and Celebrimbor agrees against Annatar’s wishes.

Disa insists that Durin tell his father about the plan, or she will do it herself. When they return to the forge, Annatar informs Celebrimbor that Gil-galad has halted ring production. This prompts Celebrimbor to lie to Annatar and say the forge is closing, intending to write to the High King to congratulate him on the success of the rings.

The King’s aide, Narvi, informs him that the people want to petition him to open the grain reserves in Khazad-dûm. Prince Durin, who delivers Celebrimbor’s offer, joins the King to discuss the petition. Durin also apologizes to his father, which the King acknowledges but doesn’t truly accept. Durin admits he doesn’t trust the power offered before the King departs.

3. In The Rings of Power Season 2 Episode 3, Isildur and Arondir reunite

In the Southlands wasteland, Isildur and Berek come across a marsh with pools of dead bodies, similar to the Dead Marshes in The Two Towers. Isildur finds a cart surrounded by dead humans and horses and encounters a surviving woman, Estrid. She mistakes him for an Orc, stabs him, and then informs him that the boats have already left for the coast.

The two stumble upon a dying man who turns out to be part of a plan to rob them. Arondir arrives, saves them, and suggests they go to Pelargir instead of tracking down the attackers. He then leaves due to his urgent matters.

It’s Bronwyn’s (Nazanin Boniadi) funeral. She was one of my favorite characters, a natural leader with a forbidden romance arc. Boniadi’s advocacy work, especially with the Women’s Life Freedom movement in Iran, resonates with me as an Iranian woman living abroad. I understand her decision to leave, but I’ll miss her.

Estrid sharpens her knife to remove the marks from her neck. Theo poses as Adar’s ally to help Isildur escape with Berek, but they are ambushed, and Theo encounters an unidentified entity before Isildur is taken.

4. An Unexpected Visitor at Miriel’s Coronation

On Miriel’s coronation day in Númenor, she wears a white gown as planned, while Pharazôn shows up dressed in red. As the proceedings begin, voices in the crowd criticize the Queen’s choice. Miriel asks the crowd to consider who inspires them to speak up and invites them to grieve. Eärien claims to speak up for her brother, revealing that Miriel consulted the Palantir at the old king’s direction.

To gauge Miriel’s reaction, Pharazôn commands the stone to be destroyed after Eärien throws it into the crowd. Chaos ensues as the crowd encircles Elendil and the Queen, and an eagle arrives, seemingly favoring Pharazôn. With the people’s support, Pharazôn assumes leadership of Númenor.

The Rings of Power Season 2 premiere concluded with King Durin, Prince Durin, and Disa presenting Mithril as promised. Annatar and Celebrimbor forged more rings, catching up with all existing characters.
