Prime Video’s new limited seven-part series, The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart, just got its first teaser trailer. Based on Holly Ringland’s 2106 debut novel sharing the same name, the adaptation was first announced in May 2021 and stars Avatar’s Sigourney Weaver and Lost’s Alycia Debnam-Carey.
The Prime Original spins a tale of family, tragedy, female resilience, and more, spanning across two decades of the eponymous character’s life. Alice Hart goes to live with her grandmother June at the age of nine after losing her family home and more to a mysterious fire.
However, when the secrets of her past sprout other secrets, and she learns her guardian has been lying to her about unspeakable things, the young woman runs from the scenic flowery landscape to the barren desert of Australia. There she meets Dylan, a charming and dangerous boy, as she tries to figure out where her life went wrong.
Prime Video dropped the show’s first teaser trailer today, and you can view the video below or on YouTube directly – but stick around as I break it down for you here.
The trailer opens with Sigourney Weaver’s June asking Alice to come back, even though she knows her granddaughter is mad at her for the betrayal. The secrets she’s about to reveal can’t be left on a voicemail.
Flashbacks of her traumatic past play out as she retells how everything went up in flames when she was little, alluding to the fire that robbed her of her innocent life. June takes her in, and she’s introduced to the Flowers, women who run June’s farm, which apparently has faces sticking out of the bark of its trees – an illusion or hallucination, I’m not sure.
For years, Alice remains in the dark but runs away once she starts looking for the truth, and the flowers confront why June hid everything from her. “How could you?” asked Twig, to which June only replied, “I just promised I’d keep her safe; can we do that, Twig?”
The series is set in the idyllic location of Australia’s beautiful landscape, complete with towering flowers and mighty trees, which also have a deeper meaning to the story. The series will premiere the first four episodes on Prime Video on August 4, 2023, with weekly episodes continuing till August 25, 2023.
Directed by famous Australian director Glendyn Ivin on Sarah Lambert’s screenplay, do you think the show will be a hit or a miss? Tell us what you think in the comments below.
