Naughty Dog has revealed more details about The Last of Us Part 1 Remake in a new video posted by PlayStation. Naughty Dog’s co-president Neil Druckman, Game Director Matthew Gallant, and Creative Director Shaun Escayg explained how the game has been remade for PS5 and PC in a new deep-dive video.
A PS Blog update also revealed that the Remake will feature 4K resolution, 30 FPS, and dynamic 4K, 60 FPS gameplay. Technical improvements like denser physics, smoother animations, AI upgrades, and a host of accessibility options are also included.
Coming to the new modes included in the remake, The Last of Us Part 1 remake will have a new permadeath mode, a speedrun mode, an updated photo mode, unlockable costumes for Joel and Ellie, and a model-viewer mode.
Permadeath mode was introduced in The Last of Us Part 2 and will function similarly in the Part 1 remake. At the beginning of the game, players will choose whether death sends them back to the start of a chapter, an act, or, for the hardcore players, the beginning of the game itself.
If the player dies, they’ll have to restart from the beginning of their selected time. Upon death, players will receive a status screen detailing the cause of death and how long they survived.
The Speedrun mode will feature a helpful little clock on the upper right showing where the player is in the game and how much time has passed. It is currently unknown if there will be leaderboards or any unlockable rewards for quicker completion.
Senior Director Sid Shuman said that-
From the art direction to the character models, the entire game has been rebuilt from the ground up to take advantage of a new generation of graphical capability, allowing this game to reach the visual fidelity that the studio aspired for when crafting this experience.

The announcement trailer revealed that the game will have the same combat mechanics as the original, which is unfortunate as newer mechanics from The Last of Us Part 2, like dodging, would have been a welcome inclusion.
With permadeath, speedruns, and more, The Last of Us Part 1 seems to have a fair amount to offer over its predecessor. The rumored price of $70 might be a little over the top as the game is only 9 years old. The Last of Us Part 1 will launch in September 2022, although the launch date for PC is still not known.
