After deciding to stay with Joel and help him recover, Ellie still has a big worry. Without medicine, Joel’s fatal wound cannot heal and will only fester with an infection, but where is she supposed to get the antibiotics, he needs? She comes across David and his helpful group, and he even offers her what she needs in exchange for a deer she hunts.
But David’s helpful mask is simply a facade that slips by the end of the episode, revealing the religious leader has vengeance in mind for Joel. He wants revenge for the men Joel killed before he was stabbed, and when he gets Ellie, David holds her captive as a trophy – the only person rewarded with immunity against the deadliest virus.
The episode introduces him as the helpful savior who gains Ellie’s trust to get to Joel, and he is almost successful in avenging his fallen follower. But the Penicillin he provided to Joel gave the wounded man just enough boost to take down the men David sent.
David describes himself as a messenger of God, here to lead his people and guarantee their safety. But of course, we later learn that he was part of the QZ and even now supplies the group with food under a monstrous guise – unbeknownst to most of his followers, he has turned his cult into cannibals. A shocking twist to those who didn’t know David from the games.
He wants to cherish the feeling of retrieving the only person immune to the virus and even forcing himself upon her sexually, and that’s where we understand the true deviousness of Scott Shepherd’s character.
Most of David’s group seem like innocent sheep following their master with blind faith, but the villainous leader and his select followers pose a dangerous threat to the duo.
David’s cult will not let Ellie and Joel pass by without raising their arms against the duo to avenge their leader; after all, David’s trained them well.
The penultimate episode has set up a worthy antagonist against Joel and Ellie in the apocalyptic world, and we’ll just have to wait till next week’s finale to know what comes of the new rivalry.
