Right after the gruesome season 1 finale, The Last of Us was renewed for a second season. Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have promised that the story will continue beyond second season, as the plot for The Last of Us: part 2 video game is quite comprehensive, but other than that, little is known about season 2.
Apart from Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey’s return as Joel and Ellie, Druckmann has now teased a new character’s entry on Instagram. Sharing an image teasing the arrival of Abby in season 2, Druckmann promises fans that season 2 is “on its way.” You can view his original post below:
For those who aren’t familiar with the game, let me give you a short introduction as to who Abby is and what her entry in season 2 means for the dynamic duo.
After murdering the only surgeon who could produce the cure with Ellie’s genes and eradicating the Fireflies, Joel feeds Ellie a deceitful story, and they leave Salt Lake City. In the game, they head to Jackson for a life of lesser violence, but vengeance is gunning for them.
Abby, the daughter of the same doctor Joel murdered in the season 1 finale, clears FEDRA out of Boston and heads back to Utah, only to find her father dead. She leaves on the quest to find her father’s killer and avenge him, and upon descending in Jackson, she brutally kills Joel in front of Ellie.
After Joel’s death, Ellie will go on her hunt for Abby and seek justice for the death of her only father figure. With Abby’s arrival, Druckmann and Mazin promise a season of revenge and rage, very different from the first season, which spoke of love and fierce protection.
Joel and Abby’s cycle of violence and vengeance might as well be the focus of the upcoming season, but I can’t be sure of that. Of course, there are other aspects to highlight from the Last of Us Part II – the dwindling trust between Ellie and Joel prior to his death, Ellie’s violent streak and trauma, her relationship with Dina, and more.

The Last of Us is an HBO TV series adaptation of the award-winning video game of the same name originally developed by Naughty Dog.
It is set in 2033, as a fungal infestation plagues humans, turning them feral and blind before finally finishing them off. The series follows Joel’s journey to escort an immune 14-year-old Ellie to the Fireflies, who hope to study her to procure a vaccine.
