The viewership for The Last of Us season 1 finale has reached new heights, officially surpassing the viewership of another one of HBO’s biggest hits, House of the Dragon.
Since its release in January, the series adaptation of the highly regarded post-apocalyptic video game by Naughty Dog, has become a classic and a must-watch TV show.
The Last of Us attracted a significant viewership each week, and this trend continued in the season 1 finale.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, The Last of Us season 1 finale, titled, look for the Light, had an average viewership of 8.2 million across all HBO platforms on Sunday night, marking a slight increase from the previous series high of 8.1 million viewers in episode 8.
According to HBO, the first six episodes of The Last of Us season 1 had an average viewership of 30.4 million per episode, surpassing the average audience of 29 million per episode for House of the Dragon.
It’s quite impressive that The Last of Us season 1 finale achieved another record-breaking viewership despite competing against the Oscars on ABC.
This isn’t the first time that the HBO’s post-apocalyptic show has held its own against award shows; episode 4 also aired against the Grammys on CBS and set a series high with 7.5 million viewers. In total, The Last of Us season 1 saw an increase of 75 percent in total viewership throughout its run.
The Last of Us and House of the Dragon have frequently been compared due to their exceptional quality and large audience size, with the former falling just short of the latter in terms of viewership upon its premiere.
However, The Last of Us has now surpassed House of the Dragon, making it the HBO series with the largest audience since Game of Thrones season 8, which averaged 44 million viewers per episode.
With The Last of Us already renewed for season 2 by HBO, it has the potential to surpass Game of Thrones in terms of viewership in its upcoming season.
