Creators Talk about Joel’s Tragedy in The Last of Us BTS Video 

HBO’s latest behind-the-scenes video of The Last of Us teased Joel Miller’s heartbreaking moment that will change his entire persona.  

The upcoming horror drama is based on an award-winning video game of the same name and stars Pedro Pascal as Joel. He is a black-market smuggler tasked with escorting a little girl Ellie to a militant group called the Fireflies. 

Things aren’t as easy as they seem, though. A massive apocalypse has hit the world, and survival is a luxury amid the bloodthirsty monsters roaming the planet. 

Although reluctant to accept the job, he soon realizes that the girl carries a rare gene that makes her immune to the fatal virus that has crippled the entire population.  

HBO Max recently shared a behind-the-scenes video of the sets, which teases a heartbreaking moment for the protagonist Joel. 

The footage also features creators Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin, alongside Ramsey and Pedro. They talk about the nitty-gritty of the show and what the audience can expect. 

Pedro Pascal talks about Joel’s loss when his daughter Sarah dies and describes the event as the one “that shapes the character for the rest of his life.”

So, how does Sarah die? 

The details behind Sarah’s death may differ from that of the video game, but the storyline will probably remain the same. 

In the video game, Joel reaches home to find Sarah waiting for him. She wanted to give her only parent a birthday gift. 

We see a tender father-daughter moment developing for a brief moment before being interrupted by a loud bang. The outbreak has reached the doorstep! 

Joel, Sarah, and his brother Tommy try to escape but find themselves stuck in a mob of panic-stricken people. 

Ditching the car, they start running away from the crowd and run into a soldier. The soldier has been ordered to shoot on sight. Joel manages to escape the bullets, but Sarah gets shot and dies in his arms. 

This terrible loss makes Joel lose faith in humanity. Joel becomes a rogue citizen and starts killing anyone who stands in his path. This coerces his brother Tommy to leave him and join the Fireflies. 

However, his encounter with little Ellie changes everything. He starts feeling emotions that have been buried inside him for ages. 

As the two navigate across the towns searching for the Fireflies, they develop a bond that reminds him of his daughter Sarah. The indelible pain of Sarah’s death starts getting buried under the innocent joys that Ellie brings. 

With The Last of us premiering on January 15, the audience will have to wait a little more than a week to see everything unfolding right before their eyes! 

About The Last Of Us

The Last of Us is an HBO TV series adaptation of the award-winning video game of the same name originally developed by Naughty Dog.

It is set in 2033, as a fungal infestation plagues humans, turning them feral and blind before finally finishing them off. The series follows Joel’s journey to escort an immune 14-year-old Ellie to the Fireflies, who hope to study her to procure a vaccine.

The cast comprises Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, both famed for their roles in Games of Thrones, along with Gabriel Luna, Merle Dandridge, and Nico Parker. The show was renewed for season 2.
