If you’re searching for a fresh new show to watch, look no further. The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey is the one you need to get behind. Latest from Apple TV’s original series, it stars the powerhouse that is Samuel L. Jackson in a persona you’ve never seen him in before.
So what is the show all about? Here’s the short answer:
The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey is about a 93-year-old man Ptolemy, who suffers from dementia. He is taken care of by his great-nephew Reggie, until one day, he dies under mysterious circumstances. Now, Ptolemy with his limited memory must solve his murder.
You can’t lie—this blurb in itself is a compelling invitation to give the show a go. But if you’d like more details, read on below:
Why You Should Watch The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey
The first thing I felt while watching the premiere was that this is not Samuel L Jackson. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a welcomed delight to see in many big franchises. But the way he immerses himself into Ptolemy Grey is just stunning.
You forget him as an actor in popular blockbusters and get totally sucked into the plight of this frail old man.
This brings me to the premise. Ptolemy is over ninety, living all alone in a house that resembles an overpacked storage unit. He likes listening to the TV, but he never turns it off because, “what if the channel gets lost?”
Although you can tell he’s of sound body… his mind, not so much. He regularly sees and interacts with visions of a man named Coydog, mistakes other women for his late wife, and experiences traumatic flashbacks about a house on fire. Because of this, he stays indoors all the time.
Thankfully, his great-nephew Reggie comes to check on him every three-four days, bringing food and taking Ptolemy to the doctor, bank, or wherever else need be.
It’s so heartwarming that it pains you to know that it’s not going to last. One day, Reggie is gunned down under mysterious circumstances and the muddled Ptolemy is distraught. The only person who cared about him is gone!
The thing is, just earlier in the week, Reggie did tell Ptolemy of some troubles he was facing. But Ptolemy’s mind being the way it is, cannot remember the details.
Then a doctor tells Ptolemy about a remedy currently in research that can help regain all his memories and reverse his dementia, at the cost of a few undisclosed “drawbacks.”
Is it worth taking this experimental medicine to find Reggie’s killer? And if yes, will he be ready to face all his traumatic memories? As he puts across at one point in the show, some things are best left forgotten.
The first two episodes of The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey are out now and a new one will air every Friday on Apple TV. Tune in!
