Netflix Cancels Sherlock Holmes Spin-Off Series The Irregulars

The Irregulars of Baker Street are out of commission from Netflix as of now. As reported by Deadline, the popular Sherlock spin-off drama series  The Irregulars has been canceled by Netflix, and for no apparent reason.

It has been just over a month since the show launched its first season on March 26. The streaming giant canned it despite the fact that The Irregulars spanned an approximate of 643 million minutes of viewers’ streaming time across its eight episodes.

It had surpassed The Falcon and The Winter Soldier at the end of April, though it had aired five more episodes than latter at the time. Based on the figures, the show held number one spot in the US for two weeks, and had also landed on Netflix’s Top 10 List.

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier

The series, set in Victorian London, shows a group of troubled street teenagers manoeuvred into solving crimes for Doctor Watson and his business associate, the evasive Sherlock Holmes.

The crimes take on a paranormal turn there, and The Baker Street Irregulars ought to come together to save the world.

The Irregulars is based on the works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and was written by Tom Bidwell. Produced by Drama Republic, Greg Brenman and Rebecca Hodgson are the executive producers. It was directed by Johnny Allan, Joss Agnew, and Weronika Tofilska.

The series amassed mostly positive reviews, having a 78% critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the score did drop to 55% when we considered audience review scores. But one exact reason cannot be pinpointed for the cancelation of The Irregulars.

Earlier, on March 30, as Newsweek had shared, Production Weekly had cited that the show’s second season would have been shot in Liverpool, UK in summer 2021.

As the news of cancelation came flooding in, the fans expressed their outrage across social media. Fans took to twitter to share their grievances:

At least they can rest easy knowing that the first season did not end on a cliffhanger.

Currently, there are no significant plot leads that would have led fans cling to hope for future seasons. Otherwise, this could have been a lot worse. Until an official confirmation comes around, we have been left wondering why such a revered show was canceled halfway.
