The cast of How I Met Your Father teases that the series will feature more cameos from its parent series, How I Met Your Mother, apart from Cobie Smulder’s Robin Scherbatsky and Neil Patrick Harris’ Barney Stinson.
How I Met Your Father is a spin-off of the iconic 2004 CBS sitcom, How I Met Your Mother, created by Carter Bays and Craig Thomas. The series follows the same format as the original series where a 50-something Sophie narrates to her son the story of how she met his father.
The series is full of various parallels, references and cameos from the original series. The season 1 finale featured a cameo by Cobie Smulders, who reprised her role as Robin Scherbatsky from the original series.
While we were still under the aura of our dear Sparkles, the season 2 premiere had another legendary surprise in store: the return of Neil Patrick Harris in arguably his most iconic role, Barney Stinson.
It’s confirmed that we will see more of Harris as Barney in the ongoing season of HIMYF, as Sophie promises she’ll “get there soon”. However, this is not all! How I Met Your Father stars, Tom Ainsley, Suraj Sharma, and Francia Raisa have teased that more cameos are coming up in an exclusive interview with ScreenRant.
Though the trio did not reveal which cameos we can expect, they promised that they will be “insane”. Check out an excerpt from the interview here –
SR: We know from the flash forward that we are going to get a Barney Stinson cameo at some point. Could we potentially see anyone else from the original cast?
Tom Ainsley: There are some insane cameos.
Suraj Sharma: Insane cameos that you don’t see coming.
Francia Raisa: When I read the script, I was like, “Really?!”
Considering the hints and how the makers have remained quite positive about the original cast’s return in the ongoing spin-off, it is likely that all five members of the main cast will make an appearance in the series at some point. We’re already two down with Robin and Barney’s cameos, so we’re left with Marshall, Lily and last but not least, Teddy Westside aka Ted Mosby.
Marshall or Lily could be making the next big appearance in the series, since Jesse and Sid are now living in their old apartment. They may not make an appearance together but depending on their availability, Alysson Hannigan and Jason Segel could definitely return. We could even see their kids, as going by the timeline they should be in their teens in 2023.
The makers have already confirmed that Barney’s cameo will mark a major turning point for Sophie, so it will not just be for the sake of nostalgia but also contribute something to the story. We will also see how Barney has changed after becoming a father and being divorced from Robin.
Robin’s cameo too had an impact on Sophie and made her go back to Jesse to resolve things. Though that did not go as planned, her cameo was not just for the sake of nostalgia. Marshall and Lily’s cameo could also have a similar purpose.
The closest counterpart to Marshall and Lily’s steady relationship is that of Sid and Hannah. Since the couple has been facing issues due to the long-distance factor, our OG couple Marshmallow and Lilypad could help them out as well.
Though this might be expecting too much, HIMYF is set in 2022-23, which means Tracy is still alive. According to How I Met Your Mother, Tracy died in 2024, six years before Ted begins narrating the story of meeting her to his kids. So as of now, Ted should be happily married to Tracy, which means, there’s a chance for the OG mother to return to HIMYF!
And last but not least, I don’t think the “insane cameos” will ever be complete without the return of Ted Mosby. Josh Radnor has already expressed an interest in reprising his role as Ted in HIMYF so there’s the hint right there that we’ll get a Classic Schmosby cameo sometime in the series. It is likely that he will be the last to make an appearance so it could take a while before he returns, but he will at some point it seems.
Imagine Barney employing the “Ted Mosby” trick (which is also one of his most unproblematic pranks) from his Playbook in his cameo where he says “I Love You” to a girl to freak her out and get rid of her, taking inspiration from Ted’s first date with Robin.
This could be even more legendary, since Robin did mention her first date with Ted to Sophie in her cameo. So, Barney playing that prank would not only join the dots but also bring back the Playbook in the most unproblematic way possible. It will also be a way of teasing a future Ted Mosby cameo, which is inevitable, if you ask me.
