In episode four, titled ‘Unwritten Affair,’ Tokuko was finally blessed with a child after years of hoping for one, but the joyous moment quickly soured.
A calamity hit the town, and several civilians lost their lives. An even bigger tragedy struck when Shigemori suddenly fell ill and died soon afterwards.
As Shigemori sensed his death arriving, he passed the family sword to his son Koremori and declared him the Heike clan’s new head.
Moreover, he passed on his legacy to Biwa by giving his eye to her. As a result, Biwa was able to see her father and Shigemori in the end.

Episode 5 Preview & Speculation
It’s a known fact that in the earlier ages, people used to believe in spiritual things a lot.
Shigemori was no different, and he somehow knew how to ease Tokuko’s pain, but how he was able to see the exiled ministers around Tokuko despite them being well and alive is still unclear.
It may or may not mean that Shigemori’s powers had more to it than just seeing roaming spirits, and it seems like even Shigemori himself was unaware of it.
Now that Biwa has inherited his power, she could use it to save the fall of the Heike clan. After all, that’s what Shigemori wanted, and he did anything and everything he could for the sake of it.
After Shigemori’s death, the emperor had no reason to keep the Heike in power anymore. The Heike clan was saved only because of Shigemori, but it looks like his children will pay the hefty price now.
It’s high time for Koremori to step up and take the responsibility of the head of the clan. Nevertheless, the next episode will be amazing, and I look forward to how Biwa will use the power inherited to her by Shigemori.

Episode 4 Recap
After a few years, Tokuko finally gets pregnant. During the childbirth process, Shigemori sits beside his sister and sees a lot of spirits surrounding the to-be-mother. It gives him chills, but Biwa calms him down.
Later, Shigemori tells Biwa that he saw the spirits of the exiled ministers during the Shishigatani incident. Shigemori visits his father and tells him that Tokuko’s troubles are due to those punished for the Shishigatani plot.
He suggests holding a service for them and forgiving the Kikagaishima exiles. Lord Kiyomori agrees to forgive them, except Lord Shunkan as the plotting started at his estate. Surprisingly, Tokuko’s condition improves, and she gives birth to a beautiful boy.
Tokuko asks Biwa to see what the future holds for the young lord with her foreseeing power. Although Biwa refuses Tokuko, she secretly covers one of her eyes and sees the young lord drowning in the ocean. Soon, a massive typhoon hits the village and destroys everything.
Moriko, one of Kiyomori’s daughters, also dies in the incident. Tokuko confronts Shigemori that no new husband was sought for Moriko after her husband died at nine because the Heike clan wanted to hold on to the assets she inherited from her husband.
Meanwhile, a rumor spreads in the village that God punished the Heike clan for how they snatched up Fujiwara’s assets. Shigemori tells Biwa that ‘onmyoji’ has predicted a great emergency will befall the nation, followed by a war.
Shigemori realizes that the entire Heike clan will fall due to his father’s mistake and offers his prayers at the shrine. As Shigemori sits in front of Biwa, she sees something coming from him but doesn’t say anything.
After returning from the Kumano, Shigemori falls sick and stops eating. Kiyomori holds a banquet even when his son is in the sickbed. Without any delay, Shigemori declares his eldest son, Kiyomori, as the head of the clan the next day.
Shortly after that, Shigemori breathes his last breath and dies. After his death, Biwa sees her father and Shigemori in front of her. She realizes that she has inherited Shigemori’s eye through which he could see the roaming spirits.
About The Heike Story
The Heike Story is an original anime by Studio Science SARU which follows the story of a musician girl Biwa, who has the power to see ghosts and the future. She befriends the heir of the powerful Taira clan and prophesies the clan’s eventual downfall.
The story is adapted from Hideo Furukawa’s novel Heiki Monogatari, a retelling of the 12th century Genpei War between the Taira and the Minamoto clan for the control of Japan.
