The season 5 finale of The Handmaid’s Tale placed pretty much every character in places where they’re far from being “safe,” making for a very ironic title. Janine, Luke, & Nick end up in jail, Lawrence is making headway in his plan to raise Gilead to its best potential, and June & Serena are on the run with their respective babies.
The finale finished without wrapping up the end for all the main characters, and we’re excited to see what fate awaits them in the sixth and final season. One thing is for sure – this wasn’t the end, but only the beginning of it.
1. Season 6 Speculation
We know the audience wasn’t expecting much from Nick, but he tried, okay! The effort counts, right? Whatever the cause, his fate in Season 6 rests entirely on Commander Lawrence. But with his marriage in shambles, we’re pretty much over what happens to Nick.
June and Serena’s meeting at the end might be coincidental, but it is clearly an indication that their arc is rounding off to a reluctant alliance. We’re excited to see how their relationship will turn in season 6.
Janine’s future looks pretty bleak, with her punishment ranging from torture to mutilation or even hanging. But as frequent as it is to see a hanging in Gilead, we’re sure big things await Janine, and her revenge will be a delightful watch in the next season.
Speaking of Janine, Lydia’s soft spot for the handmaid will turn the tide in Lydia’s heart, and we may finally see retaliation from the old handler sometime soon in season 6.
Tuello’s involvement in June’s life revolving around her lowest points nearing the end of season 5 have us doubting if he really is an ally or just an enemy with a double face. We expect him to show up in season 6.
With June in Hawaii and Hannah still in Gilead, we’re rooting for the mother and daughter reuniting in the last season. But we’ve learned not to hope because of tear-jerker plot twists.
2. Season 6 Release Date
The Handmaid’s Tale was renewed for a sixth and final season ahead of its season 5 premiere. Hulu hasn’t confirmed the release date for season 6, but we think the last season will premiere sometime in Fall 2023.

3. Episode 10 Recap
June attends another memorial service after she escapes her assassination attempt and is almost run over by someone. Luke reaches the driver before he can finish his task and beats him to death, and Canada issues a warrant for his arrest.
Nick confronts Lawrence about the attack on June, but Lawrence denies it. Not believing him, Nick signs on as a double agent with Tuello’s government. But when Nick punches Lawrence at his wedding with Naomi, he is thrown in jail for his duplicitous mission.
Lydia asks Naomi to accept Janine as her handmaid after the wedding to reunite Janine and Angela. Naomi agrees to strict conditions after seeing Janine’s meek behavior, but that mask slips from Janine, ending with her in jail facing a dangerous end.
June and Luke decide to go on the run to Hawaii, attempting to get away from Gilead’s attack on her and Toronto demanding Luke’s arrest. But at the station, Luke deliberately gets himself arrested to ensure June and Nicole can escape unharmed, much to June’s dismay.
On the train, June chances upon Serena, also on the run from Gilead and the Wheelers with Noah, and the two share a silent moment.
