The Handmaid’s Tale has spent five seasons exploring a dystopian world where women have no autonomy over themselves. In this setting, it follows the life of June, whose actions are bringing about a silent revolution. Season 5 just finished airing this November and it has left us with the promise of one last enthralling season.
So what can we expect from Season 6?
The Handmaid’s Tale will return for a final season, expected to air in 2023. It may depict June finally reuniting with her daughter Hannah and saving her from Gilead.
Details about Season 6 are quite scant at the moment, but here’s what we know so far:
1. The Handmaid’s Tale S6 Release Date
Since Season 6 had an early renewal, it’s possible that we shall get the swansong season soon! The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 is expected to release in mid to late 2023.
Just like the previous seasons, Season 6 is expected to have ten episodes in total.
However, this is subject to change as this is the show’s last season. For the sake of wrapping up the story, the makers might add a few extra episodes.
2. The Handmaid’s Tale S6 Plot
The show has extensively expanded the novel’s premise and even moved past it. So, as fans, we can’t really turn to the book for hints about how Season 6 will turn out.
But I can make a few education guesses. For one, June’s main agenda has always been to get her daughter, Hannah, out of Gilead. This last season may depict her last attempt to do so, whether it is successful or not.
Season 5 also left us with a bunch of subplot cliffhangers. Nick is arrested for assaulting Lawrence (and probably for his suspicious links to Tuella), Janine is arrested for attacking Naomi, and Luke is arrested for killing June’s attacker.
3. The Handmaid’s Tale S6 Cast
The main case is sure to make a return: Elisabeth Moss, Bradley Whitford, Yvonne Strahovski, Max Minghella, O-T Fagbenle, Ann Dowd, Madeline Brewer, and Sam Jaeger, among others.
Plus, if you’ve missed Alexis Bledel’s Emily, there is a small possibility that she may return for the final season. Executive producer Bruce Miller has hinted that the team has “plans” for the character. Fingers crossed!
4. Is The Handmaid’s Tale ending with Season 6?
All good things come to an end. So yes, The Handmaid’s Tale will end with Season 6, as the show has finished covering the majority of the book’s events. But fret not! This is not the last we will see of this universe. The Handmaid’s Tale’s story will be continued in the spinoff series, The Testaments. The spinoff is confirmed and may go into development in 2024 or 2025. Stay tuned!
