Fallout Fans, Meet The Ghoul: Walton Goggins’ Video Game Connection Explained

Amazon Prime Video has released its first look at the Fallout TV series, which has gotten fans wondering who the Ghoul’s Fallout character is per the video game’s storyline. 

Bethesda Games’ Fallout 3 rejuvenated the video game series by infusing an extra layer of spook and terror into the post-apocalyptic, open-world classic. 

Although the game has been widely praised for various reasons, it doesn’t bear the typical hallmarks of a game begging to be adapted for the small screen. Despite the difficulties, Amazon decided to take the risk and develop a TV show because of its immersive world-building and popularity. 

Although the upcoming 2024 series is based on the Fallout franchise, it pulls from the existing world and tells a different story while continuing the current narrative. 

Despite featuring original characters like Ella Purnell’s Lucy and Kyle MacLachlan’s Hank, the TV show is based on an alternate reality that features a nuclear wasteland and leans heavily on the 1950s retrofuturistic aesthetic. 

Lastly, the Fallout TV series borrows the game’s existing lores and fables, including the game’s ghouls. 

The Ghoul is the show’s third central character and has been dubbed ‘Fallout’s wild card’ by Vanity Fair. Played by Walton Goggins, who also featured in juggernauts like Django Unchained and Justified, the Ghoul is a bounty hunter in the universe.

Although the series’ plot is still a secret, we expect the makers to use the mysterious character judiciously and make him a memorable addition to the universe’s post-human race. 

The most acclaimed entry in the Fallout saga, Fallout 3, follows the journey of a Vault dweller who has never seen the outside world. 

Vaults are social experiments designed to keep people protected from the nuclear wasteland. One fine day, the protagonist’s father leaves the vault. The hero chases after him, only to discover the unspeakable atrocities of the degenerate nuclear wasteland. 

The Fallout TV show will explore a brand new story within the same universe, but fans can expect to see familiar elements and lore from the games, as well as some original twists.

At first glance, MacLachlan and Purnell’s characters resemble the ones from the original game. However, that isn’t the case with Walton Goggins’ character. 

The Ghoul from the TV show is, by design, different from the game. In the game, Ghouls are typically mutated survivors from the holocaust, meant to serve as fodder for the players to kill. However, the TV show will surely show Goggins as a ‘human’ character with a definite personality trait.
