Kaoru, a coworker of Hikaru during his early days as a doctor, makes her appearance at his clinic. After taking him to a park where they could chat privately, she asks him to join the oversight committee of a new advanced AI, preparing to upgrade itself even further.

A world consisting of humans and humanoids naturally has conflict amongst the two. While humans remain jealous of humanoids’ intelligence and built-in features, the latter cannot grow as a person since they remain bound by initial specifications.

One such humanoid racer finds himself in Hikaru’s office, asking if there’s any way through which he can gain any more muscle and keep up with the human athletes around him. Meanwhile, Hikaru’s assistant goes shopping for sweets as a present.

However, she walks in on Kaoru’s consultation with Hikaru, who later drags her out to the park for a secret conversation. Kaoru reveals the details about Michi, an ultra-high spec AI that has proposed a self-upgrade program and invites Hikaru to join the oversight team. He doesn’t find any point in joining since it didn’t help with his mom’s investigation the last time, and he refuses.

Jun continues training for the upcoming regional qualifiers, although his motivation is already zero. His defeat to Masa haunts him daily, and he eventually tries switching to a different sport.

During his volleyball match with Masa, he runs into him, and they both fall. As a result of his biological body, Masa gets injured and is hospitalized in the critical days of the qualifiers.

Filled with guilt and determination to make it up to Masa, Jun runs further and faster than he ever could. The only thing holding him back was his mentality, and the unwavering support of Masa was all he needed to pull through the slump and go beyond.

Kaoru meets Michi regarding the oversight committee members and sits within the highly advanced AI facility. The person she wanted most with him, Hikaru, stays back at the hospital, and she’s forced to take this task alone.

AI no Idenshi (The Genes of AI) is a sci-fi manga series by Kyūri Yamada. It began serialization in November 2015 and concluded in August 2017, followed by two sequel manga series. The manga is now inspiring a TV anime by Madhouse.
