The First Slam Dunk was a widely anticipated film by fans since it revived the classic Slam Dunk series by Takehiko Inoue. However, the film has performed an uncommon feat for a series without any new installments for twenty-five years.
Slam Dunk’s first full-length animated film, “The First Slam Dunk”, was released across Japan on December 3, 2022, in 378 theaters. In the first two days, the film not only sold 847,000 tickets, earning 1.296 billion yen ($9.5 million) but now also stands at the number 1 position at the box office.
Before this, four anime films were also released in the 90s when the anime and the manga were still ongoing. These were a part of the Toei Anime Fair and were released alongside other films from the studio.
The First Slam Dunk is, therefore, the first to have a theatrical release and also the first to run for more than an hour. It has a runtime of more than 2 hours.
Makoto Shinkai’s Suzume stood at #1 for three weekends before falling to the second position. That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime: Scarlet Bond also previously stood at #2 and has now dropped to #4 in its second weekend.
One Piece: Red, the latest film from the One Piece franchise, has finally dropped from the top 5, dropping to #7 in its eighteenth weekend, totaling 18.6 billion yen in revenue.
The First Slam Dunk also tops Filmarks’ first-day satisfaction ranking, with a rating of 4.35/5.0. It is speculated to reach 5-6 billion by the next weekend.
Takehiko Inoue, who wrote the original manga, has directed and written for the movie. With the creator being involved, the franchise being popular already, and the animation technology of today, the opening had to be massive. Let’s see how long it stays on top.
