The First Lady Episode 8 Recap
The episode opens with Michelle getting her hair styled and straightened. At the fundraiser she watches a white woman mistake another black woman for her. Malia approaches her mother, clearly disturbed after watching media coverage of unarmed black men being shot and brutalized by the police and asks her why such occurrences are still happening.
Michelle is still experiencing daily microaggressions and recounts the time her school counselor told her she wasn’t ‘Princeton material.’ She’s invited to deliver a speech at Tuskegee University and she agrees to attending the event without consulting the West Wing offices first, knowing very well they were likely to deny the request. She delivers a heartwarming speech to the Graduating class of 2015.
Eleanor faces challenges of her own as she is worried for the Jewish refugees that are being denied entry into the US due to Franklin’s insistence on not picking sides during the war. She decides to bring up the topic during a dinner party with influential guests and shows them photos of the grim realities of the SS Quanza refugees. There is notable tension due to this, and she’s accused of making the guests uncomfortable but she manages to secure the visas for the refugees.
