The Exorcist: Deceiver is reportedly still in the making, aiming for a 2025 release irrespective of the fate of its predecessor, The Exorcist: Believer. Believer is the first film in the trilogy, which serves as a sequel to the 1973 film The Exorcist.
The Exorcist: Believer follows a father, Victor Fielding, seeking help from Chris MacNeil after evil spirits possess his daughter and her friend. The film’s box office collection was not up to the mark as it opened at $26.5 million, in contrast to the expected $30-35 million mark. Moreover, the film was met with negative reviews, with a 24% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
According to THR, the poor reviews and box office collections have not changed the makers’ plan to move forward with Deceiver, the sequel to Believer, and the second film in the sequel trilogy. The film is set to release on April 18, 2025.
The decision to move forward is because Blumhouse and Universal have already invested almost $400 million on the distribution rights of the trilogy. However, the production team will consider changing the script and rethink certain creative decisions before the film goes into production.
Thankfully, the ending of Believer does not end on a cliffhanger or tease the return of its main characters. So, it will not be much of a hassle to rethink certain creative aspects of the film.
Moreover, David Gordon Green, who was previously approached for directing the trilogy, has recently raised doubts about returning to direct Deceiver. Actor Ellen Burstyn, who was part of the first film, is also unlikely to return.
Due to all of these factors, it will be easier for the team to take off the cast and crew of the first film from the upcoming sequel. Deceiver could follow the same path as Believer and tell a new story about possession set in the Exorcist universe. However, the focus should be on commercializing the script.
Another possibility is to bring back Regan MacNeil, another popular franchise character, which could give the sequel a new direction and attract fans of the original franchise.
